Lake Erie Trip -- Part 1 - 09/02/08 12:32 AM

The Cedar Point Regional gave me an excuse to visit relatives in Ohio and see some of the lighthouses along Lake Erie so I went a few days early and stayed a few days afterwards. Since I was flying in and out of Detroit, I figured I would try and see a few of the lights in that area as well.

Windmill Point MI located at the entrance to the Detroit River from Lake St. Clair in Mariner Park

William Livingstone Memorial Light located at the eastern tip of Belle Isle Island, MI. This lighthouse was erected by the Lake Carriers Association and the citizens of Detroit to honor the memory of William Livingstone who was President of the Lake Carriers Association from 1902-1925 and one of Detroit’s most prominent and public spirited citizens.

On to Ohio and visiting with relatives but along the way I stopped at a few lighthouses.

Manhattan Range Lights were built as a pair and guarded the mouth of the Maumee River. They have since been moved to their present locations.

Manhattan Rear Range Light sits on the grounds of H. Hansen Industries and there is no trespassing signs prominently posted so pictures have to be taken from the sidewalk or from across the street.

Manhattan Front Range Light sits next to the Six Pack Bar & Grill in their parking lot; easy access to grounds.

While photographing the Manhattan Rear Range Light, a gentleman told me about a third light “up the road past the golf course” so off I went in that direction and found the Point Place Light.

This memorial lighthouse was dedicated to the Point Place & Shoreland Community, suburb of Toledo; sits in a roadside park that is beautifully landscaped.

Port Clinton Light is located at the Brands Marina in Port Clinton. I stopped at the office to inquire about seeing the light and the gentleman was very friendly when giving me directions on driving through the marina to the light’s location. The only thing he asked was that I obey the 5 mph speed limit while on his property. This small wooden lighthouse guarded the west breakwater of the Portage River entrance between 1874 and 1964.

Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It overlooks the Sandusky Bay and has been operating since 1822.

its original 3rd order Fresnel lens added to the lighthouse in 1905.

Besides the tower and keeper’s house a barn remains standing on the property as well.

Huron Harbor Lighthouse was built in 1936 and marks the entrance to the Huron Harbor. The breakwater is a popular fishing pier but the day I was there no one was catching anything.

The picturesque 38 foot Cedar Point Lighthouse was built in 1862 at the tip of the Cedar Point Peninsula. The light, which was used for navigation until 1909, is located atop the lighthouse keeper’s 6 room limestone home. The lighthouse is not open to the public but after the Regional we were given the opportunity to go inside and look around on the ground floor which is being used by the campground resort primarily for storage. Work is definitely needed on the inside as evidenced by this photo of the ceiling in the kitchen area.

Thanks for the photos. I'll be in Detroit in October and will try to find those lights in the city, Ladybug, that you saw on your trip. Any hints on finding those ones in Detroit?

Great shots of the Ohio lighthouses! I've seen most of them, but will try to get to the Cedar Point light on my October trip since that is the one I haven't been to yet. Looks like it needs some TLC.
