NHL Lighthouses

Of the over 2000 registerd National Historic Landmarks, only nine of them are lighthouses, they are:

Boston Harbor Light - Little Brewster Island, Boston, MA

Cape Hatteras Light - Buxton, NC

Sandy Hook Light - Highlands, NJ

Southeast Block Island Light - New Shoreham, RI

Cape Ann Twin Lights - Thatcher Island, MA

Old Cape Henry Light - Virginia Beach, VA

Grosse Point Light - Evanston, IL

Ponce DeLeon Inlet Light - Daytona Beach, FL

Thomas Point Shoal Light - Annapolis, MD

I have been to two of these lights, Sandy Hook and Grosse Point. How many of these lights have you been to?

There is a different designation that many lighthouses have " National Register of Historic Places "

This list includes about 72,000 properties.

Haven't been to Southeast Block or Cape Ann yet Maybe this fall.

Been to Grosse Point. Seen Boston Harbor and the Twin Lights at Cape Ann two ways (one if from land and two if by sea) but haven't actually set foot on those islands. Do they count? If so that's 3 for me.

I've visited only Ponce, Hatteras and Old Cape Henry and climbed all three.

Hope to see Boston and Southeast Block in October.

Seen 8, climbed 5. Have yet to go to Block Island.

Seen 9 climbed 6 although Cape Ann Twin Lights were seen from a mile away...

Sandy Hook Light - Highlands, NJ Climbed this one to many times to count.

Southeast Block Island Light - New Shoreham, RI. Only climbed this one once.


Ponce DeLeon Inlet Light - Daytona Beach, FL Did not climb this one while we were there- my back was bothering me that day

Thomas Point Shoal Light - Annapolis, MD Have not been on this one- but hopefully that will change in the near future. I saw it up close and personal from a boat out of Annapolis.

I'll get to the rest one of these days. I've really got to try and get to Cape Hatteras. North Carolina is the only state on the East Coast that I have not been to any Lighthouses in that state.

Like Grace, I hope to see Southeast Block and get a real tour of Boston Harbor this fall.
Someday, I hope to get inside of Thomas Point.

I love climbing lighthouses.

Seen and climbed Ponce Inlet many times, including a night climb. Climbed Old Cape Henry and it was the first one I ever climbed (also saw by boat). Been to Cape Hatteras twice, but due to bad weather was not allowed to climb either time. Have seen Thomas Point from both land and boat, but could not get on lighthouse. Will see the rest, just a question of when.

I have seen and climbed Old Cape Henry and Ponce Inlet.

I have visited Cape Hatteras many times but have yet to make the trip up!

Cape Henry - seen this light a number of times and was the first light I ever climbed.

Cape Hatteras seen a number of times, never climbed, been too dang hot & humid.

Ponce Inlet saw this light for the first time Sept 05, but did not climb, too dang hot & humid.

After living in Colorado for 24 years I can't tolerate the humidity like I used to growing up in VA.

Mel, I grew up along the Gulf Coast and always have hated the humidity. I would love to live in a dry climate where I could go outdoors in the summer - it's always cooler there at night, too!

When I was at Cape Hatteras at 9am on June 28th the Park Employee showed me his gauge which recorded 95% humidy. He said sometimes it rains inside. I was afraid they wouldn't let us climb but they did, and I survived. I didn't feel it that much but my tshirt got mighty wet.

I know of several buildings that it can rain in if the humidity is high enough. The Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center, and the large blimp hangar at Goodyear in Akron, OH are two examples. The Cape Hatteras light is small compared to those buildings. Height might be a bigger factor than actual square footage.

Nights in Colorado are even cooler because of the altitude. The thin air doesn't hold heat well. Even when temps hit the high 90's, the night time lows can drop to 60.

I've seen six and climbed three.

I love Colorado - and Arizona - and New Mexico. I've spent some freezing nights in the Grand Canyon and Mesa Verde - brrrr! During the day, the heat is a lot more tolerable when you don't have to contend with the humidity. I envy those of you who live in such gorgeous surroundings, too!

I've seen all but Grosse Point Light.
