The following is an e-mail I received from Cheryl Roberts of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society regarding Cape Hatteras Light:
Hello, everyone,
The following message concerns the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and planned repairs after a small piece of metal fell from a support segment of a stair step. The lighthouse is temporarily closed for climbing, but the park still remains open!! Be sure to see the Keepers Circle of Stones engraved with the keepers' names at the old site, a project completed by the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.
Engineers who have inspected the steps say that age and salt air (evident in the amount of rust) along with the load of hundreds of thousands of visitors' footsteps have taken their toll. Repairs will have to be planned and completed. How long the lighthouse will be closed for climbing is undetermined, but safety and historic fabric preservation are priorities in this matter.

Park Service, Outer Banks Group:
Park Service Requests a Second Look at Lighthouse
Outer Banks Group Superintendent Francis Peltier announced today that he has requested a second engineering team to evaluate and inspect the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stairway. The team is expected to arrive in the park within the next week. It was determined by the Service, after review of the preliminary draft report completed by an initial inspection team, that further investigation was necessary to ensure that a variety of options are considered for treatment of the structure. The secondary team should complete their analysis and provide a draft report to the Service within a week of visiting the site. The final report of the initial investigation team will soon be completed, and the results released to the public. The lighthouse will remain closed until further notice. It is not unusual for a secondary opinion to be requested by the Service in complex situations involving significant park resources and large numbers of visitors. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark visited by over 200,000 visitors per year. The stairway system in the lighthouse is a complex design, which will require unique expertise for proper evaluation. "The Service fully realizes the importance of moving expeditiously with repairs so that the lighthouse can re-open in a timely manner," stated Peltier. "We must, however, take the time that is necessary to arrive at the best decision possible to provide for the safety of our visitors, the safety of our staff, and for the preservation of the lighthouse itself." Due to safety concerns, National Park Service officials closed the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to climbing by the public on June 11, 2001, when a small (3 *" x 2 *" x 5/8"), relatively heavy, support segment from the cast iron, spiral stairway dislodged and fell. Although the lighthouse was open to the public at the time, the falling segment did not strike any visitors.

We'll keep you informed of the progress in this matter.
