Streets & Maps 2000 - 07/10/99 05:28 PM

Microsoft's latest version of "Streets & Maps" is out. This actually combines two separate programs that were sold separately onto 2 CDs. One CD is for installation, the other remains in your CD drive while operating the programs.

For finding a location or planning a trip, this is a great program. Having used the previous version, this one is a LOT better and the previous wasn't too bad.

You can plan and save an itenerary and print out various kinds of pages -- such as a strip map with turn-by-turn driving instructions complete with mileage and time estimates.

It wook 15 minutes to prepare and modify an itinerary from Key West lighthouse to Amelia Island Lighthouse, hitting the major beacons along the way.

There's information on 25,000 hotels 14,000 restaurants (ZAGAT), etc which I haven't checked out yet.

Price at Staples was $39 - with a $20 rebate offer from Microsoft that expires 3/30/2000. That's one GREAT deal IMO.

Lots of great features.

My only gripe is the box is 10 x 12.5 x 2" and what's inside is a CD jewel box and registration forms. - no manual, but you don't need one.

If others have or get this program, we could do some sharing of lighthousing trips and 'push pins' (ID locations for lighthouses).

Major lighthouses can be found quickly through the "find" feature. If a lighthouse isn't listed, you may need to call up a map of the area and make the stop someting nearby or create a push pin for it's location.

I searched just "Lighthouse" and found a lot of them -- but also 21 "Lighthouse Restaurants" -- not counting the "Lighthouse Diners" or "Lighthouse Cafes" etc.

Highly recommended for Windows 95/98/NT users.
