Have Camera - Will Travel - 06/01/05 04:04 PM

I'll be leaving on a two week trip tomorrow and won't be able to access a computer for part of that time- and when I can I may not want to.

I'll be getting to some Lighthouses along the way in Hawaii, Washington and Oregon. I'll post some info and photos when we get back. I've got a brand new digital camera to learn how to use. (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5K with a stabilizer and a 12X optical zoom and 5 megapixels)

I'm sure you and Esther will have a great time Dennis...am looking forward to seeing your pictures when you get home. Oregon has some of my most favorite lighthouses.

Re: Have Camera - Will Travel - 06/02/05 03:25 AM

I hope that I can master the new camera enough to get some good shots- ther's a setting that for lack of a better term is the idiot proof setting.

I'm going to start there and after getting some shots from that setting take some others after I understand the manual a bit better. I should ahve bought it a bit earlier- kept changing my mind on which one to buy.

The LI Lighthouse challenge decided it after talking to Dave and seeing his Panasonic.

Nice part about the digital cameras, you can see the pictures right away and weed out the ones you don't want or messed up on.

Have a great trip and take lots of pictures.

Ooohhhh ... pictures of the Hawaii lights... great - looking forward to those!
Digital cameras are a great thing! Had one for nearly 5 years now and we are most impressed. They are cheaper to "run" as you print only the pictures you REALY want and you can take as many as you feel like without having to worry about the cost of developing ...
Have a great time!

Re: Have Camera - Will Travel - 06/11/05 06:16 AM

Here's a short report on part of the trip so far. I've got that 1 GB card almost 2/3 full already. I have that 512 mb card still but at this rate I may have to get another one in Oregon or Washington.

I was successful in adding two more Lighthouses to my total so far on
this trip.

We all got to Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse on our way from Volcano, HI to
Hilo, HI. It's a fairly ugly example of a Lighthouse- but still great
to get there. It's on the easternmost tip of the island of Hawaii and
there is a facility there that tests the air quality as this si some
of the freshest air anywhere- it's hit nothing since it left the West
Coast of the US usually several weeks before.

This one can be gotten to fairly easily and with a regular car with a
bit of caution. The road is rough but very doable with a car.

I went to Kauhola Point by myself today- Esther (my wife) & Beth (our
daughter) were going on the Mauna Kea summit Tour (which they don't
advise thosw with heart problems to do ) so I decided to rent a 4
wheek drive vehicle and drive on up to the northern Coast of the
Island and visit this one.

I have to say that a 4 wheek drive vehicle is a requirement for this
one- or a one way walk of about 1.2 miles about 1/3 of the time in
the shade. The "road" is very rough with many levels within feet of
each other. Luckily it doesn't rain in this area much or it would be
even worse.

There is a gate with a private property sign but I stopped in at a
junk yard / body shop right there and asked and they said- no
Problem! Just be sure to close the gate behibd you. So I went merrily
(and bumpily) down the road. The Lighthouse is a double of Barber's
Point on Oahu and lacks a lantern room as well. It does have an
aerobeacon that was revolving while I was there. It's in a bit worse
shape than Barber's Point and could use some help.

I got some good photos of the Lighthouse (and the "road").

I can't upload them here but I will in about a week or so after we
get home from part two of our little trek- the Pacific Northwest. We
go from a tropical rain forest, dessert, etc to a Coastal Rain
forest. At least the temperature will be more to my liking- but not
Esther's.

More reports and photos to come. I did get to Diamond Head and
Barber's Point on Oahu but missed Makapu Point. We had seen all 3 on
our previous trip to Hawaii in 2003.

Dennis, if your cards get full, find a Wal-Mart with a one-hour photo. They can dump your images to a CD onsite as long as you are under 700MB (size of the CD) and then you can erase your card and start over. Cheaper solution than buying a new card...or if you can find an electronics store, you could get a portable HD or portable stand alone CD burner, which is what I use. I only have 1.2GB of cards and that is how I survive on the road...

Re: Have Camera - Will Travel - 06/11/05 05:14 PM

Sounds like you're having fun! I've never really wanted to go to Hawaii before (I'm not really a south-Pacific kinda guy...more like North Atlantic...), but reading this, and this travel guide I got from the library that covers the entire US, I now want to go.

Looking forward to the photos when you get back! laugh

Jen,

Now that you mention that I saw signs for that in volcano- $10 to do what you mention. Not a bad deal.

Greg I'm not a south pacific (or anywhere hot) kind of person either so I'm not quite sure how I managed to get to both Las Vegas and Hawaii this year- oh yeah it was Esther's turn to choose.(plus I didn't want to take that 14 hour flight to South Korea from the Wesr coast)

Re: Have Camera - Will Travel - 06/11/05 09:09 PM

Don't worry about it being hotter in Hawaii. If you were home here in NJ, you'd be dealing with 90+ degree temperatures. Being in Hawaii is like having the same weather in a more scenic setting. laugh

Re: Have Camera - Will Travel - 06/14/05 07:56 AM

Well, that may very well be true but in NJ I can get away without going out into the haet m ore easily.

I'm in my kind of weather now- mid sixties. We've had a bit of rain but today was beautiful out in the Pacific northwest. We got to a number of WA & OR Lighthouses yesterday and today (Sun & Mon)

Details to follow- I've almost filled up my 1 GB card. It's got 485 sahots on it so far. We should get to Cape Blanco and Coquille tomorrow (we were there this evening at sunset)

Fran,

Don't worry I've got pictures- almost 480 so far and that's after deleting a bunch along the way.

I hope to get them ready quickly after I get home but it might take a few days.
