Montauk 21 - 08/20/01 04:11 PM

Well we're just back from our 21st camping trip to Montauk, and as usual I found some new nooks and crannies that I somehow missed on previous trips.
Weather was great,(only rained one night while we were sleeping) 80 degrees, partly to mostly sunny, water temperature 70+, waves could have been better, lobster yummy ( right John? ). 7 days camping on the beach - "Is this heaven?"(Field of Dreams)
Did a sunset and sunrise (5:45am est)at the Lighthouse - photos to follow (get ready Kristin). The sun really doesn't set so you can see it from land (not like a computer enhanced one I've seen - John and Paul!) I guess if I was way out on a boat I could probably get the right angle? Maybe next year Bob M.?
Walked completely around the riprap on the point and found the trail down to the southwest side of the beach that leads back to the parking lot.
Now for some 'off the wall' happenings:
I'm sitting listening to a radio station from New London, Conn about 5 pm one day and it was the "Ron Foster Show"! Is this our Ron Foster or a relative? It was kind of wacky, and didn't sound like "our" Ron but ...
Saturday night we're at the movies and who's sitting behind us NYC exMayor Ed Koch, no doubt doing a movie review for his new occupation.

Did you look for the Montauk Letterbox Bob?

Bob - The guy on the radio is no relation but I do get many questions about him. Some of the people at work actually think I moonlight as a DJ. I look forward to seeing your photos.

I was just at Montauk last Friday and it was great. The weather was perfect and the lighthouse and museum were excellant. I haven't been out that way for almost 10 years. The museum is vastly different from what I remember and I really enjoy how it looks now.

The one thing that concerns me is the erosion that has taken place to the North of the light. There is a good picture of the way that area has eroded over the last few years.

A funny short story came to mind when I read the above posts about Montauk Light. Lorna and I were at the light a year or so ago accompanied by my Jack Russell Terrier, Chipper. Chipper is not a big dog but weighs in around 23 pounds. He looks very similar in size to "Eddie" of the televison show , Frazier.

Well I paid the fee for us to enter the grounds and started walking up the hill towards the light. Suddenly, without warning, we were approached and told we couldn't bring Chipper on to the grounds. I was disappointed that they felt that way and Lorna volunteered to take Chipper off the grounds and take him for a walk down by the beach. I proceeded to climb the light, visit the grounds and gift shop and then joined Lorna down at the beach.

We walked down a sandy path and saw a guide showing some foreign tourists around and explaining about various bushes and animals that inhabit the area. The funny part was she spotted Chipper's dog prints in the sand and started to explain these were the tracks of a fox that must be in the area. Some of the tourists even took pictures of Chipper's tracks.

If Chipper was a very large dog and left large paw prints, I wonder if the guide would have explained them as prints from a mountain lion? LOL

How wonderful Bob that you have such a special place close to you that you can return to year after year. 21 years is a long time and I'm sure you and your family have many fond memories of these vacations.

Bob M: Your story about Chipper was priceless!

Soon Kristin will post the same angle picture 18 years later. You'll be floored by the difference. That's Rob, Kerri, Kristin and Michael in from a Christmas postcard.
