Stoneport Light, Lake Huron, MI

Stoneport Light, Lake Huron, MI - 07/19/06 10:50 PM

The illustrated map and directory (Lighthouses of the United States) we're using to plan our trip to the WILD 2006 cruise lists Stoneport Light and indicates it is still standing. I've been searching the web for about an hour and all I can find out about it is its coordinates. Have any of you found a site that you can link me to that will give me some history on this light?

Thanks,

Sandy

Sandy, what are the coordinates? amd/or what town is the light supposed to be near? Presuming it is a land light, it almost has to be an alias if it is currently active. (unless the currently active is a lamp on a stick type light.)

There is a town of Stoneport in the Presque Isle Peninsula.

Coordinates are 45.18 & 83.25. It's listed
on the ARLHS site (where I got the coordinates from) and is shown on the illustrated map we use. It comes up in a whole bunch of links on both Yahoo and IE, but there is no historical information on any of the links. The coordinates show it between Thunder Bay, MI and MIddle Island, MI.

I just now read the description shown on that illustrated map and it states:

Active Stoneport (1955)--end of landing dock, SE of Presque Isle, West side of Lake Huron; private aid.

Seems strange that an active light, even one that's a private aid, would not have something written about it somewhere, especially since it's referred to by so many links.

• The town of Stonesport is inland and actually on Grand Lake, south and a little west of Presque Isle.

• The coordinates you have are a little rough, going only to 2 digits right of the decimal. Streets & Trips puts them in Lake Huron, on a line roughly equal to the south end of Long Lake (the 2nd/southern lake of the two lakes just below Presque Isle). This is about 6 miles off-shore, and about 3.25 miles SE of Middle Island.

• I have a light list of Michigan Lights, listing 193 lights - lights we all know, minor aids, lights on the outhouse, all sorts of lights except one names Stoneport or with those coordinates.

• The books I would consider as knowledgeable concerning GL lights have no listing for this light.

Personally I would skip this one (if it really exists) and concentrate on the many great lights along the Lake Huron coast. Presque Isle alone has 2 lighthouses and a pair of range lights.

Thanks Dave. BTW John, it's also listed on the lighthouse stickers Michigan page, but without the "pvt" which is supposed to be shown if the light is a private aid to navigation.
