East Quoddy Part 2 - 08/24/03 02:18 AM

The next morning we were lucky enough to catch low tide and go over to the Lighthouse.

The first picture is just as the gravel bar that we needed to walk over on began to show up. YOu can just begin to see it in the center of the picture. There are steps and ladders leading down and up on both ends of the gravel bar.

This next picture shows the gravel bar as it looked after we got back from the lighthouse. When we went over it was about 6 feet wide. There is a three hour window to visit the light. If your late you have an eight hour wait for the next low tide.

After walking over the gravel bar to the first island there is a bridge that takes you over to the second island. That's Sharon on the bridge.

The next picture shows the top of the ladder that takes you down to the final crossing to the lighthouse. You pick your way through the seaweed very carefully!

We finally made it to the third island and the lighthouse.

That's Sharon on the first ladder for the middle island. Notice a rung missing near the bottom of the ladder.

Sharon again getting ready to go down the ladder from the first island back to the mainland. Quite an interesting adventure to say the least. I'm told that the tides in the area are in the vicinity of 22 feet.

All and all it was an exciting crossing to East Quoddy. I recommend it to all the adventuresome in our group.

Really nice job, Bert! I find it really interesting that you posted these tonight at 8pm... at the same time I had finished our plans for our post-Long Island Regional lighthouse tour... which includes East Quoddy as our final destination.. We are staying a couple days on Campobello at a B & B so we can catch the tide right in order to go over to the light. The ladder's look different than when we were there a few years ago..

Now I have to find the tide charts for the area for the 24th and 25th of September...

I loved getting out to this lighthouse when I visited. We had a nice fog coverage that morning and you couldn't see the lighthouse until you were almost right at it. Only a handful from our group made it out to the light. After seeing your great photos, I really want to go back! Thank you for sharing your trip with us.

Bert, I agree with Paul that the ladders look much different than when we were there about four years ago. As I mentioned in my post on your other thread (and as Shirin states here) I want to return and spend more time at this lighthouse in the future.

Thanks again for sharing your tour with us.

Paul and Ron, I'm sure that the ladders have changed. I pointed the old ladders out to Sharon. They were strewn around the new ones. I guess they left the old ones there to rot. One of the men that spend their days at the picnic table told me that they were much steeper ladders a few years ago. Now two of them are more like stairs than ladders. Makes them much easier to climb.

One of the old ladders was at about a 45 degree angle up a rock faced cliff... it was a lot of fun. And the one at the light itself had rungs so far apart it was like every other one was missing!

What a great adventure, Bert! Great pictures too.

P.S. Did you dig any clams while the tide was out?

The ladders were different when I was there too.
They looked like they went straight up and down.

Thanks for posting these images Bert. For those of us who have only heard about what it takes to get to E. Quoddy it sure helps to understand what's involved.

We have a friend who's planning a trip to Northern Maine in September. He said they were going to go to W. Quoddy and I told him he just had to go to E. Quoddy too. Then along came your great photos. So I emailed him your threads and now he's really excited to go!!! smile

Tell your friend that East Quoddy is a definite must see! It's only about 15 miles from West Quoddy and very easy to get across the border. As you go over the bridge you can see Mulholland on your left. If I were your friend I'd make sure to try to get that as the tide is going out. There is a three hour window of opprtunity to get over to the light if they wish. A great experience to say the least.

I remember that very challenging journey to East Quoddy 2 years ago. I thought I was totally crazy for climbing those rickety ladders. But my Husband cheered me on saying "C'mon how soon do you think we'll be back here to do this." I figured since we made the long drive I better try and do my best! We somehow confused made it up and over and up and over and through to get to the lighthouse. It was wonderful --- and really worth it too! We even stopped the night before so we could see it lit up at night, too.

Terrific pictures and story! Thanks for posting them! laugh

Re: East Quoddy Part 2 - 09/19/04 01:38 AM

Many thanks for this post Bert. I forwarded this thread last year to some friends who were going up into Maine. They didn't even realize they should go to E. Quoddy until I told them about it and showed them your post. They didn't make it quite all the way over but they did get to the middle island and really enjoyed having gone as far as they did. smile

That's what this forum is all about. Passing on information to all who are interested in lighthouses, their beauty, their history their preservation, our love of them and so on. I'm sure that I'm not the first to say this, but I really believe that this is what we are all about and proud of it.

Thanks guys!
