El Morro in 1958

El Morro in 1958 - 11/09/10 01:07 AM

In 1958 my dad went to Puerto Rico on a business trip. He went to El Morro and these are his photos of it

This was labeled "Army car and escort" I do not know why that was needed. (my dad was not in the Army) Maybe the fort was under the jurisdiction of the US Army in 1958.

I did not get that close in 2005

The light is visible in the early dawn in the top picture. The difference in temperature and humidity between inside the ship and outside caused my camera to fog up and it was awhile before I got it de-misted.

The fort was an actually army fort until 1961. When the army left in 61 the property was given to the National Park Service. See the NPS time line below.

According to the lighthouse friends it was originally gray and painted the cream color in the 30s.
