Yerba Buena open?

Yerba Buena open? - 04/16/03 07:40 AM

Hey West Coasties!

I was out there in the Fall and tried my darndest to see this light. We took every non-private road on the island but couldn't find it, so I assume it is on the CG base. I spoke to the guy at the gate, but he had no idea how to get to the light and would not allow access due to security issues. Can one visit it? I've seen some great photos of it...

Not a chance. With an ORANGE alert, I doubt it. Heck even if it were lower, I doubt it. Seems like some USCG top guy lives there.

Maybe Derith has some experience. smile

You can see it from the Oakland Bay Bridge, when driving to Oakland from San Francisco. Just be in the far right lane on the lower level of the bridge.

We're at code yeller now. It's nice to finally be able to unwrap the duct tape off the dog.

Yerba Buena is an off limits lighthouse as it sits in the front yard of the Admiral's residence. How I ever got as close as I did is a fluke. It took months and months of planning and pleading. Lately, I almost got there, but after I was told I could, was told "no way"! Sooooooo
I would suggest that you try a cruise around the island. Yes, you can see it from the bridge, but would have to have someone driving and someone taking photos. Have the camera ready when you go thru the tunnel after the Yerba Buena exit, sit on your knees while sitting on the back seat. The cameraman/camerwoman needs to have the camera pointed out the right corner of the back window, and just over the rail when you come out of the tunnel, start taking photos.

Enjoy the hunt!

No laps for me Bob. I got to walk right up to the charming light and go inside. When we are on the trip in July, I will tell you about the experience.

I forgot to mention that another way to see the light is to take a helicopter ride that is available at the Pier in San Fran.

Hope you get to see it, it is charming.

I was in the bay area two weeks ago and got a decent look at Yerba Buena from the Oakland - San Francisco ferry. With a 200mm zoom lens I was able to get a pretty good picture as well. The ferry runs frequently and on a pleasant day it is a gorgeous trip into the City. As a side benefit, the ferry dock in Oakland is right next to the Lightship Relief which is open for tours.

However, the ferry doesn't start running 'till around 9 or so on weekends (found that out the hard way, wanting to make an early Saturday morning round trip for that very purpose last September). Just a mile or so down the road is the old Oakland Harbor lighthouse, now a restaurant.
