Different day at Pt. Judith, 03/12/04 - 03/12/04 11:16 PM

It's really nice to live so close to Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. I was in Narragansett today and decided to take a side trip down to Point Judith Light. Apparently, I got there at the right time. It was 47 degrees when I first arrived. The wind was gusting to 25-30 knots. A cold front was fast approaching. This afforded me an opportunity to get a few different looking pics as you will see below.

Here's another shot of the USCG Station at Point Judith. I felt the cloud bank directly behind the station really adds to this photo.

I headed out towards home and was driving along the coast when the real cold front arrived. I was approaching this unusual arch at Narragansett Beach when the sky sudden darkened. I took a quick photo, drove under the arch, and before I was 200 yards up the road, it started to snow. Remember all this happend within ten minutes of leaving Pt. Judith Light. Sunny one minute, cloudy the next minute, and then came the snow! The funny part was watching the surfers at Point Judith, then seeing more surfers at Narragansett Beach, surfing in the snow!

Those cold fronts really blow out the dust and clear the air -- and the clouds sure give it a dramatic look!

Thanks for sharing, as always Bob.

Here\'s some history about the towers

Really interesting shots Bob. It was an unusual day here in Groton also, but I was stuck at work and was unable to get any photos. Thanks so much for posting these. Nice job.

More great pictures Bob. Being a New Englander I'm sure you've heard the saying, "Don't like the weather, wait a minute."

Sure lived up to the saying today. We went from sun, to clouds, to rain, to sleet, over to snow and back to sun again in a matter of 25-30 minutes.

Unbelievable.

The clouds really do add something to the pics, and such a blue sky! Very interesting how low the cloud formations appear to be.

When I stopped at Point Judith Coast Guard Station, the gate was closed. I thought they might be enforcing the "Government Property, No Tresspassing" thing. I spoke with a welder who was working on the gate about it. He advised me they were making repairs so the gate could be closed in a hurry if necessary. He opened the gate and I entered the grounds.

It would be a shame if lighthouse people were not allowed on the grounds. It is such a beautiful location.

Love the photos, Bob! I remember Pt. Judith...the drive down the road, the station, the tower sitting there, 4th order Fresnel up top, flashing away...the foghorn...the poeple on the beach (I got a fuzzy photo of a few people on the beach, and it looks better fuzzy)...beautiful place. The Coasties were still standing on the front porch, keeping watch as someone has been doing there for countless years. I remember peeking in the tower, climbing up on the window ledge to see inside...a magical place.

I also remember The Towers. I didn't know that was what they were called, but they are impressive. I think that there is a little gift shop or something underneath, thats how big it is. Though I might be confusing it with Grand Central Terminal's (Terminal, not Station. A Station is a place along a train route. A Terminal is the beginning and end of a route. Grand Central is the beginning of the routes.) bridge over 42nd St. that takes you to the roadway around the building. I know that there is a taxi stand under there.

Great photos, Bob. The clouds are very interesting. They hover over the lower half, with the upper half devoid of clouds. Interesting situation! smile

The kids and I passed through there a couple of years ago and I got to use all those wonderful benefits of being retired military, i.e, parked inside the fence and got told where the bathroom was if we needed it. Still haven't got around to posting the pictures but it was back when all that Canadian forest fire smoke was around and the sky color was "sub par." They didn't look anywhere near as good as these!!

Thanks for these and the other photos you posted Bob. And thanks John for the link to the Towers. I do recall reading their history some time back.

Really great photo's. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering how you got those pictures without the fence in them. When Eskilday and I went we had to fight out way through those tall reeds and grass. I was sure I was going to get eaten by something! What a lighthouse wacko will do for pictures. laugh Lucky you got there at the right time. Once again the pictures are great.

As Mr. Brady always advises, "Move your feet". Every light I visit I always try, if possible, to do a 360 degree walk-around.

It's nice to live within a reasonable drive to many lights. It's also nice to be on a rotating schedule, better known as 4-on 2-off,so that I can visit lights when there isn't a crowd.
