Southwest England Recommendations?

Southwest England Recommendations? - 08/19/09 02:51 PM

Need some advice on most worthwhile lighthouses to see in southwest of England from land. We'll be heading over there in early September and more or less traveling in a circle over 10 days, with the first night's stay and second to last being more inland/away from major water ways. We'll be staying in Castle Combe, Thornbury, Bath, Lynton, Penzance 2 nights, Dartmoor, Salisbury, and then London.

I have some lighthouse maps and good websites to reference, so I know overall what's there and where. It's more a matter of that we have a fairly full itinerary already, and I'll be traveling with a not overly lighthouse enthusiastic companion (and he doesn't like to get on boats either). So, it will be more a matter of sneeking in some of the most worthwhile lighthouses that can be seen by land so he doesn't notice so much for this trip. smile If anyone has recommendations based on personal experience, please let me know.

Thanks!

Looks like this one is a good candidate for a visit ...

"To the auction house: Virginia Woolf beach is sold for £80,000,
Secret buyer snaps up 30-hectare plot on Cornish coast that probably inspired novel"

See link below for article:

Kristen:

Back in the late 90's, my daughter was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England. We went to visit and saw lighthouses from the train going up to Scotland. Janet (daughter) has a map of the UK which was very nice. It shows where some lights are. It is called "Handy Road Atlas - Great Britain". The company is Geographer's A-Z Map Company Ltd. Head Office: Fairfield Road, Boough Green, Sevenoaks, Kent TN15 8PP Perhaps you could write them or check with Amazon.com for a copy.

In My trip two years ago I visit the following English Lights. Start Point, Portland Head, Beachy Head. I would also recommend the following lights along the southern Coast; Lizard Light, St Anthony and South Foreland. If you go to Lands End you will see Longship off shore. Look at the Trinity House site for other lights. Art applaud
