Long Island Lighthouses - 07/26/07 08:28 AM
We had a great time on Long Island and were able to see 8 of the lighthouses from shore, Stratford Shoal from the ferry and 6 more during our lighthouse cruise through Sunbeam Fleet out of Waterford, CT. These are the lights we saw from shore.

Old Field Point Lighthouse was built in 1868 and is used today by the Village of Old Field as offices for the Village Clerk and Court Clerk. The keeper's cottage was built in 1825 and is now used by the village of Old Field as a Justice Center housing their Justice Court and Code Enforcement Officers.

Eatons Neck Lighthouse is located on an active Coast Guard station and requires permission from the Coast Guard to visit. We were able to obtain permission and had a very nice tour of the station. Unfortunately due to the asbestos, we were not allowed to go inside.

Moby took this picture of the Fire Island tower which was lit in 1858. The walk out is about a mile and is boardwalk all the way from the parking lot to the lighthouse.

The Cedar Island Lighthouse stands at the end of a sand spit below the bluff at Cedar Point State Park. Unfortunately my knees would not allow me to trek out to the lighthouse and I had to settle for a distant view from behind the snack bar.

The Horton Point Lighthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and we are told has a very nice museum inside. The grounds are open year round, while the lighthouse itself is open seasonally. Unfortunately the lighthouse was not open when we were there.

Montauk Point was considered such an important and dangerous piece of land that reportedly President George Washington in 1792 personally ordered construction of a lighthouse there.

Moby took this picture of the Huntington Harbor Light which is the oldest reinforced concrete lighthouse on the East Coast, and the second oldest in the country, next to the Point Arena Lighthouse in California.

Moby took this picture of the Long Beach Bar Lighthouse [replica] which was first lit on December 1, 1871, marking the entrance to Peconic Bay on the east end of Long Island.
