Retirements

Just got back from our local dealer, The Unique Shop in Spencerport, and she gave us the following list of lights retiring as per her sales rep:

162 Brant Point
160 Cape Meares
165 Charlotte--our local light
186 Concord
174 Ida Lewis
173 Mantinicus
178 Mukilteo
169 Peggy's Cove
170 Point Pinos
171 Saugerties
179 Toledo Harbor

So if you don't have them now, it's time to add them to your Christmas list!!

In the legacy that should be in the mail soon, Harbour Lights announces that these 12 lighthouses will be retired on December 31, 1999.

HL170 Point Pinos, CA
HL171 Saugerties, NY

HL179 Toledo Harbor, OH
HL186 Concord, MD

That means that dealers can order more of them until then. Some will have been retired after having all 9500 ordered by dealers, and others will be retired before the full edition run. In the article Harbour Lights explains their reasoning for the early retirements. This month window for dealers gives them time to order some before the end of the year. Stores that are near certain lighthouses will probably stock up a little on the area lighthouses. This also will mean that the Lady Lighthouse Keepers set will all now be retired with HL170 Point Pinos, HL 171 Saugerties, HL173 Matinicus Rock and HL174 Ida Lewis joining HL172 Chatham which was retired early 11/12/98 with the roofline problem.

Thanks for the info Kaiz. I purchased charlotte just a few weeks ago at our local dealer .Signed by Bill at his visit in may to our dealer here in DE. Last one left in the store .

I'm happy to see more retirements coming up soon. The time has come to move those pieces out to make room for the new releases of 1999 and the forthcoming 2000 HLs.

Wow - twelve at once. Never have this many lights been retired all at the same time. So far that will make 21 retirees in 1999. Presumably East Quoddy will retire also on 12/31/99. Anyone hear any official word on Miraflores/Gatun Locks - I assume they are retired?

Yep, Tim. Gatun & Miraflores are retired. HL has to backtrack to figure out when. (You'll recall they took too many orders.)

Wow, what a relief. This is great news. Let's just hope they clear off the shelves fairly quickly.

On the other hand, it's too bad some of these lights weren't more popular. Toledo Harbour, Selkirk, Matinicus, Saugerties...all favorites of mine.

Let's hope this becomes an annual thing, a la Dept. 56's annual clearing of the decks.

The new retirees (especially the east coast) will be ordered by knowledgeable dealers as a hedge for getting new collectors.
It will be interesting to see the final numbers on each! And how about how many are ordered between now and the cutoff? HL is also looking to cut their inventory. (Right?)
And how long will they be on shelves at retail?

I had been holding off getting Peggy's Cove and Matinicus, personal favorites of mine. Guess I know what to add to my list!

A surprising ommission is Navesink. I would have expected to see that one retired early.

Any word on La Coruna? with only 6,500 out there, I would have thought that would go as fast as Hillsboro.

All of these lighthouses that Harbour Lights will be retiring at the end of this year, were produced before the 1997 Harbour Lights releases. This means that all lighthouses produced from 1991 through 1996 will retired as of December 31, 1999.

Navesink is a 1997 Harbour Lights release.


I suspect that there could be a couple of post 1996 releases retired by the end of this year also, or soon after the first of the year 2000.
