Summer 2008 Release - 05/22/08 03:15 PM

Good Thursday Morning!

I trust all is well with each of you! Summer season "KICKS OFF" this weekend!
Let us remember those who have given their lives for our freedom!

You know two of the 2008 Summer Releases already;
HL 361 Pottawatomie WI
HL 724 2008 Christmas Replica Perkins Island ME

Go to the map and wonder what these maybe:
Limited Editions
(2) Massachusetts
(1) California
(1) Florida
(1) New Jersey
GLOWS
(1) Maryland)
(1) Connecticut

Does that help?

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/22/08 04:32 PM

My guess for Massachusetts would be East and West Chop. Long time asking for these! Maybe it's time!!! Still working on the others.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/23/08 01:31 AM

I'm going to guess that for NJ it's one of these-

Robbins Reef

Romer Shoal

I'll go along with the East & West Chop in MA.

Anybody else waiting for Cape San Blas, FL? I hear one of the restored keepers' houses is open as a gift shop now on Saturdays with plans to open the light soon.

I have to say, when I saw the 2 next to Massachusetts, an East & West Chop set came to mind.

My other guesses are:

NJ - Tinicum Rear Range
FL - Cape San Blas
CA - San Luis Obispo or Port Hueneme

Could the Maryland light be Point Lookout? I've been asking for that one for several years. A nice looking light with a "Haunting" history.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/25/08 09:26 PM

I would guess the California light to be Point Cabrillo, as it looks to be peeking out of the top right corner of the Musings!! vhappy

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/25/08 10:09 PM

I'm hoping that the Florida piece is either one of the two following.

Cape San Blas or Carrabelle/Crooked River

I think you have it!

I've been trying to figure what the lighthouse was in the Musings heading for the last 3 or 4 issues. I knew it wasn't a past HL release. It been taking me a while to look into all the lighthouses that haven't been done by HL. There still in so many!

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/26/08 03:18 AM

Could someone forward the musings to me?

webmaster@lighthousekeepers.com

P.S. Official word is the the MUSINGS is for all, not just Collectors Society Members.

Good TuesdayMorning!

I trust you all had a safe and enjoyable weekend!

I looked over all the postings - one is correct!

I am surprised that there are several mentioned that were not part of my "Collectors' Choice" responses!

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/27/08 01:46 PM

Well If its not too late.

I will just agree with what has all ready been said for Florida.

Cape Sand Blast has been a sleeper for a long time. It is one of Florida’s best kept secrets when it comes to lighthouses with lighthouse keepers house. Both Houses are still there and are very deep south looking and one is painted in typical Panhandle pastels.
This one would be my first choice for a Florida Lighthouse.

Now which one ? confused ?

Still time for some more guesses, I think!

Is it too much to ask when they will be announced?

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/27/08 05:05 PM

I'm hoping that the Chops pull through. I'll be visiting both on Saturday. I'd love to be able to buy a new release HL of them so soon after.

I mean, have we not kicked and screamed enough for them?
Posted By: Lighthouse Loon

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/28/08 01:40 AM

Not looking good for the Chops if Tony says we only guessed one right so far. Unless he means we atleast have one right???

I think the one correct guess so far is Cape San Blas, FL.

I need to do a little research to come up with new guesses for the others.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/28/08 09:38 PM

I think that Tony said only one of the posts is correct which would mean that my guess on the Chops may be correct.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/28/08 11:10 PM

My reason for thinking Chops:

Why else, in this year of a carefully-planned "Grand Tour" of HLs, would the company otherwise give Massachusetts two "valuable" slots in the schedule?

I'm thinking that something has to go together. With the pattern set the rest of the year, nothing else makes sense.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 05/29/08 01:28 AM

If it's one post thats correct, then I hope it's mine. I have the Chops & more.....

If it's actually only one of the guesses, then it can't be the Chops, as that would be two.

I hope we find out soon. bow

I guess I got that one right, but disappointed that there are no Chops this year. But there's always next year.

Ludlum Beach looks nice, not what I expected, but still very happy. Again maybe next year for one of the ones I was expecting.

So far these releases look GREAT !!! Every release seems to get better and better. cool

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/01/08 05:20 AM

Well I imagine there are a couple of people not happy to see the Pointe Vincente LH being sold.

I don't recall the amount paid but somebody bid an extremely large amount of money at the first Reunion for one of the few Pointe Vincente's made way back when. I think the thought was it would never be made- I guess never isn't as long as it used to be.

Still no little lights of mine for the Florida Reef Lights. frown

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/01/08 02:21 PM

Dennis
There was two AP's
One Pointe Vincente LH went for $10,000 and the other was given away to the person that helped Harbour Lights research the light. The new owners of Harbour lights would not be obligated to a promise that the previous owners made concerning never making a Pointe Vincente light.

Cape Sand Blast looks good. That is one on my list to buy. Now to find it in double digit.

.
Daniel,

I thought that was the amount and that there were two AP's involved but I was going on memory and did not want to add anything I was unsure of.

I agree the new owners of a compamy are not obligate to continue the practices of the previous owners. I don't believe I said any such thing in my post. I imagine that your take is one that can be inferred by my comment.

I just imagined that a person who "spent" $10,000 on an item might feel a little less positive about it now that it will lose a bit of it's uniqueness. I of course could be mistaken about this.

Did you notice the price for the Sankaty "on the move" piece !! eek !!

Although it is a bit costly, I don't mind paying more to add a larger piece(11"x7") to my collection. cool

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/01/08 10:11 PM

It slides on the tracks and it lights up when it get to it's end location.. I am going to shoot one tomorrow for the website and try and animate it so collectors can see what it does..

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/02/08 05:03 PM

I'd consider buying the Sankaty piece, having just visited it yesterday as my 200th light. What better way to remember that moment?

And Ludlum might be good to bring notice to the plight of that light...which is a bit not-good.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/03/08 09:41 PM

I'm thrilled to finally have Point Vicente released! I've already placed my order.
It's been 11 years since this piece was originally "announced" in HL literaure as a future LE release. There was a pix (I believe back in 1997) of a presentation of the Artist Proof and noted it would be one of the new California lighthouses sculpted to be release. I once asked Bill Younger about it (at a regional event held in Branford, CT) and I believe he told me something like they were not satisfied with the sculpture. He sort of smiled and I think that was it...

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/04/08 05:20 AM

I got a lot of the Summer release images to John today who has them up on the 2008 Harbour Lights catalog page..

One example is below..

Sankaty Head Massachusetts on the Move..

It doesn't move own it's on but you can move it on the rails like I did for these images.. There are 8 images to make this animation of the movement.. The light starts flashing when you move it to the end of the rails

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/04/08 11:22 AM

The new Sankaty Head Light is attractive and innovative. I can't help but wonder if it will be a good seller at $145. The expendable cash of collectors is slowly disappearing with the constant rise in gasoline prices and the costs to heat or cool their homes. $145 is close to the equivalent of two tanks of gas for the average car. $145 is about the average cost of groceries for two people a week.

Do you buy gas, heating oil, groceries, or Sankaty Head?

 Bob

Paul, Great photo(s) of the new Sankaty piece.

My budget isn't good, but I'm still buying it. cool

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/04/08 02:18 PM

I agree Bob, the price could hurt its sales,
But the good thing is that
the production for Sankaty Head is only 999.

I think this is a smart move on HL's part. If a light is expensive adjust its production amount down.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/05/08 01:18 AM

IMHO still not as sharp as S.E. Block Is. on the Move, but it's good to do some of these non-traditional pieces (like Flying Santa, Cedar Pt.,etc.)

Now, at 999 production, can I safely assume that standing AUTOSHIPS must be less than 999???

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/05/08 05:43 AM

I definitely want the Cape San Blas and Point Vicente but Sankaty is a pretty big hit in the pocketbook. One of the things Bill always tried to do was keep the cost low so the average person could afford these gems. I miss that philosophy but then maybe keeping the edition number low will spark some sales.

Not all the time, Judy. The first one that popped into my mind was Navesink, NJ, retailing at $245. The second thought were the four Ft. Tompkins depicting the four seasons.

Personally, I think anytime they hit triple figures they scare many collectors off. The edition size of "999" is interesting though. Maybe Harbour Lights figures there are enough complete collection collectors and Nantucket lighthouse lovers to deplete the supply. It will probably sell well in the Northeast but not so well in other parts of the country.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/05/08 09:04 PM

Bob,

You are right about Navesink but it was so much bigger and different than the others and so beautiful that I guess I overlooked the price! I didn't think of Ft. Tompkins because it never was a favorite of mine and I only bought the winter one. Those two times really weren't so bad over the course of the Younger reign though.

I saw Sankaty up close and personal so I'll probably end up buying that one anyhow and because of the edition size. I'll sure have a nice collection of lighthouses when they haul me off to the poorhouse!

The mistake Harbour Lights made with the Navesink was that they did not lower the production amount.
Harbour Lights was planning on a smaller special edition of 6500 for Navesink, but got talked out of it by the Reps.

HL learned from this mistake. More expensive lights are harder to sell. The lower production also adds spice to the pot and will help sell the Sankaty. I think this will sell in the north but I can't see a big demand for this light in the South, except for those that want something different, or collects them all. It has caught my eye and I may buy this one even though it is not in my region

I think most lighthouse collectors now only collect their regions or lights they have seen. So to sell to the rest of the collectors HL has to spice up the light to attract collectors out of their normal collecting area.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/10/08 04:25 PM

Remembering more expensive HL's, one that comes to mind is Hereford 4th order Fresnel lens @ $154 and a limited edition of 4,000 released in April 2004. Based on the P&P piece I received from HL recently for my P&P winning choice, they may still have about 1,200 to ship yet. A beautiful, well done piece with special metal work.

Re: Summer 2008 Release - 06/15/08 07:01 PM

If we are going to talk lighthouse to "lighthouse", let's consider Barking Rocks @ $125.00 versus Sankaty Head @ $144.00. Now Sankaty looks like a lighthouse , shines like a lighthouse and had to be "saved" like a lighthouse. As for Barking Rocks well.........
