Open Edition Fresnel Lens

Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 07/28/00 08:29 AM

There has been some discussion that 4,000 was just not a large enough edition number. How would you feel if the next Fresnel Lens was produced as an Open Edition? Is this going to far?

What do you think?

'Excellent question, Sean. An "open edition" seems to be going a bit too far, however, if the demand is there I think HL might consider increasing the production to, say, 5500 or more. Obviously, with the release of the first one there will be quite a demand and since this is a unique piece, both sales & "feedback" to HL will have alot to do with how they handle the 2nd issue. The learning-curve just started all over again, I believe.

When it all shakes out, I think 4,000 will prove to be enough to satisfy demand. I hope Harbour Lights doesn't make the same mistake they did with the limited editions---namely, blasting the edition size through the roof on the (wrong) perception that the demand was there. Almost all of those 10,000's are going to be forced into retirement, as many of the 9,500's already have.

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 07/28/00 02:39 PM

I too would not like to see the Fresnel go open edition. As a collector, I wouldn't mind if it remained at the 4000 level edition size, but then, I'm sure HL has done this with the first piece to see if it will be popular. I also agree with Bill in that, it would be a mistake (IMHO) by going with a much larger edition size of 9500 or 10000. My vote is for limited, and no more than 5500. Thanks for creating the new thread Sean!

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 07/28/00 03:38 PM

For all of the reasons listed in the previous messages, I'm for leaving the edition size at 4000. I would be very curious to find out how many of the serious collectors would be without a Fresnel lens because of the 4000 edition size. I think that all those who want one will be able to get one. And there might even be a few left over. Time will tell!

See the chatlog for more about the edition size of the next Fresnel

Use your browsers "Edit/ Find (on this page) and search for 'fresnel'.

I'd like it to be timed.

Sean,I think HL did the right thing with the first lens.I know the 4000 was just sticking a toe in the water but
I also know OEs mean hungry Makos are in that same water.(Man these analogies are terrible.)IMHO.

I agree with Bill H. in that I think 4000 will be plenty. As with Hillsboro and some others in the "new reduced number issue" there is a lot of anticipation in the begining I.E. I still see quite a few panamas around and Hillsboro at retail. Only time will tell but I think 4000 is fine . On the possibility of a GLOW Fresnel only if you turn it on to light up ,but not as in open edition .... no way

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/01/00 07:20 PM

In order to get a feel as to how popular the lens was going to be it could have been done as a timed release - too late now. It should continue to be an LE whether timed or with an established edition size.

My late vote is for the LE.

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/02/00 04:40 AM

I agree with everyone who feels this should be kept as a limited edition. Perhaps 6,500 would be a good number for future edition sizes. This edition size would accomodate approximately one tenth of the current HL memberships.

I'd also like to see it remain a LE piece- but it would probably help others if the edition size was a little larger. I'm in such a panic to make sure that I'll get one- I think my dealer wants to kill me for bugging her everytime I go to the store. If there was a greater amount of them available- I'd rest more assured that I can find one! just my 2cents!

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/14/00 06:08 AM

New Question!!!

At the Regional Bill Y. and I were talking about the many different types of fresnel lenses. We both agreed that there were probably at least 30 different types of lenses. Harbour Lights is definately thinking about adding at least one more lense. The question here is how many different kinds of lenses would collectors be willing to buy? How much shelf space is available to add Fresnel Lenses along side Lighthouses? How many collectors might be Fresnel Lense collectors only? If Harbour Lights begins producing more lenses would demand begin to drop or is there justification to raise all preceding lenses to at least an edition size of 6,500, or was there just a rush to get the first?

What the heck am I asking? The big question is how much of a demand is there for a new collection of Fresnel Lenses? Who's going to buy 2, 5, 10, or 20...?

Tim A., I expect at least 5 or 6 paragraphs from you!!!

Whats everybody think?

Sean

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/14/00 06:49 PM

I think the first lense is Unique, and everybody wants one. After that it will be for someone trying to match their favaorite lighthouses' fresnel lens. That's why I think timed releases will probably work best.

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/14/00 07:02 PM

I too agree that the first lens is unique, and I would definitely be interested in a second if it were a lighted version. After that, it's just lighthouses for me.

There are several different shapes as well as different sizes. I would like to see at least one of each different style Fresnel done.

I agree with St. Paul. Now that they're coming out with the "beehive", atleast they need to do one "bullseye" and other unique styles.

In answer to your question, Sean.....I'll probably buy every lens they come out with. I enjoy things like lenses and foghorns almost as much as the "lights" themselves.

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/15/00 01:02 AM

I'd like to see one of every size or as said of different kinds I would get them.
For I'm not "just" HL I have a lot of nutical collection in my lower level, granted its getting full but I'll find room.

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/15/00 04:26 AM

Heck, this one's kind of a no brainer if you ask me. Keep the edition size to 4000 to maintain interest after the first one. Do them in different sizes and do them well. Keep the price under $75. HL will sell them all and everybody who wants one will get one.

Oh - and make each Fresnel model the model of a real lens from a real light with real history. Not some representative generic composite - hopefully they've learned the A/B lesson there. Include a history with each lens model - when and where originally made, lights it serviced, where it resides today, etc. A cute model that lens buffs can relate to.

There's obviously not a big enough market to support a higher edition size. Paulie is right that the number of dedicated hard core lighthouse collectors - the same group who might commit to buying all of the Fresnel series - is less than 1,000. One idea I haven't really thought through: put 'em on subscription. Let people sign up for a year to commit to buying the first 10 in the series, then make 2,000 more of each than the subscription size.

We'll see interest peak when some gomer gets $125 for one of the first model on e-Bay around Christmas time. Hey if these are meant to be special collectibles, keep 'em as such. HL shouldn't feel they owe a model to the entire country for everything they sell.

If they do make open editions then play this .wav file at home. Purse your lips tightly. Stick out your tonque. Blow. :-P

As long as they're interesting, unique, done well, and priced right, I'd probably go for the set. Pictures of the first one say to me its neat.

Six paragraphs on target,

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/15/00 04:35 AM

I think it would be neat to have one of each major class of lens. It would be cool to have a first, second, third, ect... orders of lenses next to each other to compare the differences. Although it is probably impossible to have them in scale to each other. Would you really need to have a third and a third and a half order lens?

Maybe more practical would be different styles IE Beehive, Bi-valve, ect...

Regardless, make them and I will buy.

Thanks Tim, I knew you would nail it and not let me down!!! I think your right on target though I'm not sold on the subscription idea. I will have to think about that one for a bit.

Thanks,

Sean

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/15/00 06:09 AM

I would think a model of each type or style of Fresnel would be most logical. I don't think one of each size would be too practical. If the first lens is supposed to be a 5th order, a 1st order to the same scale might make Navasink look small. I would like to see a clamshell and a bullseye to go along with the beeive. Keep the edition size small, as Tim noted, to keep interest up. We'll find one if we want one.

Re: Open Edition Fresnel Lens - 08/16/00 03:31 AM

One further comment. It would be nice if HL makes Fresnel models that go with LE models they've already done or plan to make. (But don't issue them at the same time.) The lighthouse model displayed with its lens and a little history card could be classy in the curio.
