New Rumors - 05/02/00 04:58 AM

I received my The Guiding Lights today from Jim Rutherford HLSG@aol.com . I hesitate to call them rumors because Jim's the source but since I haven't heard them officially from HL yet, I guess I should still consider them rumors. There is some really GREAT news rumored in his newsletter.

I'm not gonna tell; if you want to know, subscribe!

Lamar couldn't say it any better. Jim R. had a lot of interesting news in this issue. It looks like some exciting things to come this year from our friends at Younger & Ass. I wish I could make it to Rosemont or Atlanta. If anyone does and gets extra goodies, please keep this poor wacko in mind. I am sure we could come to a mutually agreeable deal.

I'm just guessing, but the Guiding Lights said it wasn't made with resin. My first thought was a Fresnel lens made out of acrylic. Could it be? I recall sometime the collectors had suggested such a piece.

i don't know if we said the HL would be out of acrylic, but I said something a while back about the use of acrylic in repairing real fresnels.

I also read that Jim Rutherford wrote in the Guiding Lights that "the predominant material is notresin, the material Harbour Lights primarily uses for its lighthouses" but I remember very well that Bill said the material being used is a clear resin. He repeated himself when asked to state it again, that the material that the fresnel replica is to be made from is clear resin with some metal for the brass looking framework and that it will have wheels that will allow you to turn it.

For the record, plastics (including clear ones such as polycarbonate, acrylic, etc.) are resins.

According to Webster:

1res•in "re-zen\ noun [ME, fr. MF resine, fr. L resina; akin to Gk rhetine pine resin] (14c)
1 a : any of various solid or semisolid amorphous fusible flammable natural organic substances that are usu. transparent or translucent and yellowish to brown, are formed esp. in plant secretions, are soluble in organic solvents (as ether) but not in water, are electrical nonconductors, and are used chiefly in varnishes, printing inks, plastics, and sizes and in medicine
b : rosin
2 a : any of a large class of synthetic products that have some of the physical properties of natural resins but are different chemically and are used chiefly in plastics
b : any various products made from a natural resin or a natural polymer

Harbour Lights called me and asked if I'd shoot some images of their new release. They explained that Paul was busy drying out his sock and shoes from his Wind Point adventure. I gladly execpted. They said that I might as well just keep the piece instead of sending it back. I moved some furniture around to make room for my new Harbour Lights addition. The SRP isn't too bad, what'll drain your pocketbook will be freight charges + insurance.
My wife told me to move the piano back, so I'm building a curio on the roof of my house to display it in.

I read the chat log and I think, if I remember correctly, that it stated the lens replica would be made of a clear "beehive" resin and brass.

I'm hoping to be at the Atlanta show, I'm still waiting to hear if I have airline tickets.
