My husband Larry and I will be at the reunion, but we are arriving early for the bus tours and also to go out to see Thomas Point. Will be visiting relatives in VA at either end of the reunion trip as well.

Twiggy and I will be extending our trip, and would like to be a part of this challenge. I have noticed that the tour we are taking with John will include some of these lights. I wonder how we still can be in on the challenge without doing them twice?
Wonder if we can just go back to the ones we did not see on the tour, and qualify for the challenge?
In any event, challenge or not, I believe we will see all the one's listed in the challenge as well as many up the east coast.
It is going to make for a fun trip in the month of October.
Pam

I believe I can give at least one answer to your question.

You will not qualify technically for inclusion in the Lighthouse Challenge 2001 since the point is to make it to the 10 land based Lighthouses on those two specific days.

You will be given a form from last year's Lighthouse Challenge and a set of stamps from all the Lighthouses involved when you arrive at Sandy Hook on 10-3. This will be either the second or third light you get to that day.

I will personally hand you your set as I will be one of your Tour Guides/ Greeters at Sandy Hook along with my wife and probably at least one other volunteer.

I'll check and see if we can possibly get you and any others who make the tour on 10-3 special dispensation from the requirement to make the visits on the 13/14.

We try and be an accomadating bunch in the NJ Lighthouse Society. I and others have contacted all of the Lights you will be visiting to insure a good time will be had by all that come and visit us.

See you at Sandy Hook.

Looks like a great event Dennis! Can you accomodate a bus trip from LI during the 2002 event?

Just in case those of you at the reunion forgot...the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge is this weekend.
I made my way around the all of the participating lights last year so this time around I'll be helping out at Sandy Hook. I'll be there all weekend so I hope to see some of you there!

You are all welcome to come out this weekend.

I hope all of you who went on the NJ Lighthouse tour got your Lighthouse challenge Brochures and took some back with you got those who could not make it.

I'll be helping Shirin at Sandy Hook on Saturday and I'll be at Hereford Inlet on Sunday as a volunteer for the NJLHS.

Stop in and see us. Many of th elights are open only sparingly and this is a great opportunity to se them.

Re: New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge, 10/13 & 14th - 10/15/01 05:16 AM

Well, based on my experience the Lighthouse Challenge 2001 was a reaounding success.

I spent all day yesterday at Sandy Hook and we had between 700-800 people show up. We managed to get almost 300 to the top of the lighthouse. We were running tours of 8 people every 15 minutes from 8 AM until 4:30 PM.

The weather was great and just about everybody was positive about the experience.

I was at Hereford Inlet today and we got about 400 there today. We handed out the completed stamps to about 30 people.

The weather copperated today also. It looks good for a go next year. We so;d out of our special event T Shirts early on Saturday.

A great time was had by just about everyone.

Hope some of you got to it. I know one couple from the Reunion was there, in fact it was Joyce the person who started this topic.

Saw a number of faces both days.

Great event.

Dennis

Dennis,

Congratulations to all the NJLS members and volunteers at all the lights, and thanks for sharing your love of lighthouses with others. Sounds like you had better weather than we endured. To make all the lighthouses, I have to believe a participant needs to really keep moving! (based on our marathon bus trip to NJ).

Re: New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge, 10/13 & 14th - 10/15/01 01:32 PM

Sunday was just about as crazy as Saturday at Sandy Hook. I don't know how many hundreds more came through our doors but the keepers quarters were crowded all day. It seemed to be a little slower especially in the morning but by the afternoon those who were looking for their 11th stamp started pouring in.
I was a bit tired from giving 8 tours the day before, not sleeping at home and this nasty cold I have. But, I did manage to give at least another 6 tours. You begin to loose track after taking so many people up the light. Suprisingly enough, I can still walk and talk today.
Everyone had a great time, both the volunteers and participants. I even had a special surprise, my best friends parents who are like a second mom and dad to me showed up at Sandy Hook yesterday afternoon looking for their "daughter" and their 11th stamp.
Now I'm just looking forward to getting my pictures back and a bit of rest.
Hopefully(and it sounds most likely) this event will happen again next year so that those of you who missed all the fun of the challenge can join us. And if you don't want to give it a try for both days, it can be done in 1. We had 1 couple complete the trip on Saturday at Sandy Hook and almost another dozen finished in 1 day at Tinicum.

Thanks Terry! Usually sunset and sunrise are not shots most will see at Sandy Hook since the park is closed at those times. I felt I should share what I was fortunate enough to experience.
