Re: Mombo's Any News On Next Reunion 2 - 11/10/99 04:36 AM

The Baltimore Inner Harbour and the surrounding area offers the greatest variety of activities for the next reunion. With Bill Younger cutting back on travel a reunion in Baltimore could also incorporate many of the ideas used in Atlanta as there are many HL dealers in the area. Baltimore is a central location to a great number of HL collectors just look at the Wacko map and sales of Chesapeake LE,s and related Anchor Bay . In addition to Maryland lights there are Delaware and Virginia lights within a 2 to 3.5 hour drive for any day side trips.
Look at the Book on Mid Atlantic Lights for
Geographic info for lights that can be visited from Baltimore with ease not to mention the ships that can be seen at the Inner Harbour itself plus Seven Foot Knoll.
The Venue possibilities are very good as well. OK...... your correct this is my second post here and yes I am biased toward
Baltimore. I only live 78 miles away . OH .... did I forget to mention the National Aquarium complete with Dolphin show ... great for the kids.

I agree with the Baltamore sight. If you like to take pictures of lighthouses than you will love the Chesapeake. And Baltamore sure has the room for us

The Traveres area is a great idea for the next reunion. We've been to the west and to the east, now its time to have one somewhere in between. The Traverse area is centrally located so you my travel up and down either side of the state. Lake Michigan to the west and Lake Huron to the east.If you go into the UP you can also hit the lights of Superior. Remember Michigan has 116 lighthouses. When you finish those, come on over to Wisconsin and see ours.

Re: Mombo's Any News On Next Reunion 2 - 11/18/99 10:53 PM

Here is another thing to think about. If you have the Reunion the first week in October in the Traverse area, the second weekend in October is the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival. Several lighthouses are open for the public to climb. Its always a good time. Two weekends back to back lighthouses!

Jim,
Don't forget there should also be some dynamite fall colors in northern Michigan in early October. It just can't get any better than that!

Grand Traverse would be nice, however, I asked BY about it and he questioned weather or not there would be a facility to handle a group of our size. I don't beleave there is, unless we have a HL version of WoodStock..Out side. The idea really sucks, but if we go to Grand Traverse, it may be the only solution,

What is this Paul, a new subliminal campaign for redo's?? You want Grand Traverse redone as a Reunion Event Piece?

LOL, Paul brings up a good point. If the reunion was held in Baltimore, what would the event piece be? I think every lighthouse in the immediate Baltimore area has been produced except for GLOPs. Looking at the map we run into the same problem for the immediate Grand Traverse area. I guess if the Reunion is held at any of these two sights we will have to settle for a Regional Lighthouse, but will it be able to be visited as a Harbour Light's Bus or Boat Tour?? Hmmmm??? Or maybe I just have bad map information?

Sean,
I am surprised that you think there aren't any more Lighthouses that HL could make from the Baltimore area. If you explore this webpage, I think you might find a couple or three or more. http://www.cheslights.org/heritage.htm

Our vote would be for Hooper Strait Lighthouse. The town of St. Michaels is a great place to explore (we are thinking we might want to retire there) and the museum at Hooper Straight is a wonderful place to spend a day. And the restaurant next door serves great Maryland crab.

Do you get the idea that we have spent entirely too much time there? Absolutely, and we will keep doing it - it's a great place.

Karen

Does the restaurant seat 1,000 at the same time? The fact is that, it is the Midwest's time to have the reunion. We Midwesterner’s have gone to both the left and right coasts, now it is time for everyone to come to the Great Lakes!

I would hope that both methods of travel will be used to visit lighthouses in the area.

I said immediate area. Your radius is just drawn wider than mine.

I won't enter the debate on who's turn it is for a Reunion. I simply want it to be fun, in a great location, and transportation in and out of the area to be simple and economical.

Here's an example of costs. I used the same travel dates and airlines. I used the month of October as a guide.

United Airlines Coach Class
San Diego to Traverse City roundtrip - $882.00 Per Person
San Diego to Baltimore roundtrip -
$403.00 Per Person

Hey Sean. Check fares into Grand Rapids MI and Chicago Midway or O'Hare, then plan on 4-6 hours up Lake Michigan to TC. Might be a few lighthouses along the way that could extend the driving time.
Posted By: SThompson

Re: Mombo's Any News On Next Reunion 2 - 01/17/00 12:38 AM

Thats an idea, but its another day of vacation. I just threw those figures out there for something to think about. There are definate advantages to flying into larger airports. I am sure theres probably cheaper fares, and who knows when the reunion will be. Getting a confirmation from Harbour Lights that I can go to the Reunion is really my biggest concern. Harbour Lights hasn't let us down with a bad location, and I'm sure that they won't.

Or maybe I should arrange another motor coach tour from Chicago to Traverse City. And post-reunion return via the Badger car ferry from Ludington to Milwaukee then Chicago?

Re: Mombo's Any News On Next Reunion 2 - 01/17/00 01:57 AM

Paul, the restaurant doesn't seat 1,000 at one time (even though it is quite large). The Fire Marshall might get a bit upset.
But we have already checked with the local water taxis (boats) in the Baltimore inner harbor and they have said they could handle well over 1,000 with advance notice of a couple of months. I imagine with the incentive of 1,000 meals, it might be possible to get someone to cater a dinner somewhere in the Baltimore area.

On second thought, with that kind of incentive, Michael and I could start cooking now and put it in our freezer and our neighbor's freezer and our aunt's freezer and our cousin's freezer .... and ... and.... Is there anyone out there who could loan us about 200 microwaves for a day. We have six acres of woods, so plenty of room. How many people can bring tables and chairs. Hey, this could be a blast! How about Thomasville, Pennsylvania. Concord is the closest lighthouse which we could all stop at on the way from Baltimore. It's only a 50 mile trip from the inner harbor in Baltimore so now all we need are some big buses!!! Shall we call Maureen and volunteer!

ATTENTION!
Hello. This is Michael. Do not be afraid. I have the situation in hand. I just finished the rubber room and two very nice men in white shirts are going to help me put Karen into the straight jacket.

Now that Michael brought me back to my senses . . . This, of course, is all in fun. And by the way we would love to come to Michigan. We haven't been there in a little over two years and always enjoy it when we get have visited. And Florida is always a great place to visit as well. We'd even love to go back to San Diego.

So where ever the reunion is, we are sure a great time will be had by all.

Sean, Michael is one of those people from California who don't measure distances, so I've stop doing that since we got married. Hooper Strait has become our favorite in the area. When we go boating we usually put in at Sandy Point park, up to Baltimore Light, stop on the way back by Sandy Point, then onto Thomas Point and over to Hooper Strait. Via boat, it isn't all that far and it's a beautiful trip. There is a nautical antique shop in Easton, just inland from St. Michael's that Michael and I and my brother (whenever he comes in from Ohio) always make a trip to. It is a great shop and actually kind of a museum.

We are looking forward to the reunion where ever it is.

Karen and Michael

Well I have to go on record with my vote for a Florida location for the next reunion. Last I checked we have no shortages of large hotels along the coasts and rumor has it that this state might be tourism friendly.

I've also heard reports that there might be a few lighthouses around here that might interest lighthouse enthusiasts....

Plus, it makes it more likely that I could attend. Selfish but true.
