Orient Point NY - Photo of the Week - December 3, 2001

Bob Scroope's beautiful image of Sunset on the Orient Point NY lighthouse is the photo of the week this week.




I've invited Bob to post a few words about the story of Orient Point and how he came to take this great shot.

This picture was taken on the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society's "Beacons of the Night LH trip", October 2000. I used my new Sony Mavica CD1000 camera for the first time on this trip.
Orient Point Lighthouse "Coffee Pot" was built in 1899. It is a Cassion LH which is an active "aid to navigation" and guards one side of the entrance through Plum Gut (Plum Island LH is inactive an on the other side which we're trying to save and relight) on the farmost Northeastern point of Long Island.
The East End Seaport and Marine Foundation celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the LH in August of 1999(which I thought I posted on the Forum but can't find it, archived John?).If you interested in more info on the LH, Merle Wiggin wrote a book on the history of the lighthouse that can be purchased by calling 631 477-2121. All proceeds of the sale of the book will go towards saving, maintaining and restoring East End Long Island Lighthouses. Price should be about $5.00 + $2.50 for shipping and handling.
