Stay in touch with other collectors on AIM

Stay in touch with other collectors on AIM - 12/10/01 05:26 AM

AIM is AOL's Instant Messenger Service. You do NOT need to be a member of AOL to get this service. If you ARE a member of AOL, you already have it -- although you may need to 'turn it on'.

You use AIM by creating a 'Buddy List' of other people - family, co-workers, or WACKO Friends. When you're on line you launch AIM (or set it to auto launch when you go on line) and you'll see which of the people on your buddy list are also on line at the time you are on.

You can send Instant Messages (IMs) to anyone online on your list. And they can send and exchange messages with you. A kind of one-to-one chat.

With the latest version of AIM 4.7 you can talk, share files, invite others to join in your chat, and more.

If you have an older version or if you don't have AIM, get it for free at:

www.aim.com/index.adp

Then post your AIM "Name" here. Others will add you to their Buddy List and you add them to your list. Yes, you can block specific people from seeing you are on line and you can set AIM to only allow specific people to know you are on line -- if that's your choice.

My AIM name is "Chidester". Feel free to add me to your Buddy List and I invite others with AIM - old hands or those who've recently installed it - to put their AIM Name below.

So - "Chidester" is mine. What's yours?

Re: Stay in touch with other collectors on AIM - 12/10/01 08:27 PM

I have AIM...have had it since I dropped my aol account a few years back...didn't think there was anything so great about aol after I found out you could have the instant messenger for free!
My screen name is KEScroope.
I actually use msn, so I have the msn messenger also - never have any conflict between them - I use both at the same time depending on who instant messages me - I'd be kscroope@msn.com on that.

Wow! That was interesting. I was running out of Screen Names. I have to find all those Steve Ervins and Diggers! I thought about using John Chidester but that would be fringing on copyright laws. Right John?

Try this for size.... Diggerangelo

Feeling brave? Then add me to your list!

If the confusion of the Forum name and the AIM name makes it hard to remember who is who, you can take advantage of one of the new features of the latest releases.

When the buddy list is on top of the windows, hold the mouse over each name and you'll see some information about that person. Right-click on a name and choose Store/Edit Buddy Comment. Then you can type in the person's forum name or their real name.

Now when you hold the mouse over that person's name, you'll also see the name you gave them.

Re: Stay in touch with other collectors on AIM - 12/29/01 02:06 AM

One thing I did find out is that AIM is a real system performance hog. It reduced my performance by as much as 10%. Compaq recommended that you make sure that is not checked on the start-up list so that it drags your system upon start-up. It is simple to check. Go to START, then click on RUN and type "msconfig" (no quotes). Under the start-up tab see if AIM is checked, if it is, you might want to un-check it.

You will have to start AIM manually after this. I created a shortcut and dragged it to my taskbar, then all I have to do is click on the icon to sign in. This also eliminates that annoying window asking you to connect every time you start your computer.
