Lighthouses on Stamps

Lighthouses on Stamps - 01/11/02 09:43 PM

The latest USA Philatelic catalogue from the US Postal Service has a sheet of 50 stamps called "Greeting from America" with one stamp for each state, designed with the look of souvenir postcards from the '30s and '40s. The sheet includes 4 ligthouses: Maine (Portland Head), New York (Statue of Liberty), North Carolina (Cape Hatteras), and Rhode Island (Southeast Block Island). There could be a 5th lighthouse on the sheet (New Jersey), but you can't tell from the catalogue. There's NO New Jersey stamp included in the sheet shown!! (New York appears twice instead, both before and after New Mexico. A goof I expect they'll fix on the actual sheet.)

Thanks for the info Frank! They sound like a neat item to buy! Any idea when they can be purchased, or are they available now?

Here is what the stamps look like:

The 2002 release of the Greetings From America stamps will mark the first issuance of a pane of 50 stamps in 10 years. Inspired by the retro "large letter" postcards that were used to advertise cities, states or tourist attractions in the 1930s and 1940s, artist Lonnie Busch combined flora and fauna with local points of interest into colorful collages that celebrate the unique character of each state. Text on the back of the 50-stamp pane will list each state's bird, flower, tree and capital, as well as date of statehood.
They will be released on April 4th

You can pre-order in March.
(The on-line image does not contain the double-New York goof, only the printed catalogue has this error.)
