Display the Flag

I received an email requesting that everyone display the flag September 11th in your home, in your car, on your person and at your business. I thought this was a pretty good idea. The only thing better would be to do this year round.

I have an American Flag decal on each one of my vehicles. I added them right after 9-11-01. On nice days, if we're home, I fly Old Glory at our home.

I also have American Flag decals on my cars. We also fly the Flag on all hollidays and other designated periods. I fly the Coast Guard Flag along with the American Flag during the same time. We will fly the Flag the entire week of the 11th.

I fly the flag 24/7 365 at home and it's illuminated at night. I also have a flag on my truck -- both sides. Thats Portland Head Light in the background. Taken at NELL LHHC&Y 2006.


I think this is a great idea but I'd like to see the flag fly the way it did after 9/11. They were all over. A shame it took such a tragedy to make that happen.

Oh yes, for those that don't know I have full vision thru the back and sides. These have tiny holes through out but you can't see them, or into the truck, unless you're up close.

I'm curious (as a plate collector) of the significance of the "tumbleweed" plate. I have MA tag "NORTH" on my Vette. I got that plate in 1966. NORTH is for North Attleboro, the town I grew up in and still reside in. Our arch rival is Attleboro so our town is often referred to as North. My youngest son has "NORTH1" for one of his plates. I'm a plate guy, so to speak. I have an extensive collection of Vanity/Name plates. It filled in the collecting gap between Lionel Trains and a somewhat complete collection of HL's.

Yes Tom it is a shame, but either you are patriotic or you are not. It should not take any tragedy for people to show their patriotism.

We have always flown the flag at the house and on the boat. I don't think flags flying from people's car antennas and getting all ragged is appropriate. The flag wasn't meant to be flown at 65 mph, or even 35 mph.

I sort of resent all these people who suddenly started flying flags after 9-11. If they were truly patriotic they would have been flying the flag all along.

It sounds like Jim has a classic! 1959 Vettes are worth a lot of money these days.

My Vette is a 1990 in Polo Green with saddle interior. I'm the second owner.

I fly the flag on holidays and when weather allows. It goes up in the morning and down before dark. Would love to have large flagpole in the yard with lighthing to fly "Old Glory" all the time...just haven't figured out where to put one! NICE 'vette Bob!

This was the flagpole that we had out front when we lived in RI (1970-1973). It came with the house. Our daughters are raising the flag before going to school - they had scout meeting after school.

Well one of the first things I did after I bought my house was add a flag pole. I usally fly the US and Lighthouse Service flags. When I feel like it I fly the Jolly Roger on the weekends.

Very cool, Eric. I think it's great that folks display the flag. However, I hate to see that it is left out during bad weather or until it is ruined - some businesses actually have tattered flags or very faded flags on display! Rosalie, it's a wonderful lesson for kids to raise the flag every morning; that's the way they learn how to treat it, handle it and respect it.

Bob, I'm retired and like to travel as much as money allows. Sometimes it doesn't allow to much but I go anyway. So I'm like a tumbleweed, just rolling where ever the wind takes me. Thats why I took that plate.

One of my best American flags was a free one. I was out in my kayak one day and saw a flag caught up in some tree branches along the shore. This was quite near a bridge. I mosied over and grabbed the flag. It must have come off a car that had crossed the bridge. It was in great condition and is now displayed on a section of fence at my house!

It's amazing what kind of stuff you can find in the river. Sometimes it floats right to you. I even snagged a section of dock that was floating by. I spied it, then enlisted my neighbor's son to help snare it. It was on the other side of the river. We went out in kayaks, tied onto it and brought it across the river. It makes a perfect dock for launching the kayak!

Very true, Grace! When I took the flag down one afternoon because of approaching bad weather-my 3 grandsons wanted to help. Perfect chance to teach them. They had alot of questions and I supplied the answers on the proper ways to fly and handle the flag. My 3 yr old grandson-Koleton-wanted to carry the flag to the garage. I was kind of leary(he's the "wild man" of the group) but I gave strict instructions NOT to let it ever touch the ground. Well, he made my heart swell with pride!!! He took the flag and proceeded to the garage ever so seriously, watching all the time to make sure it wasn't going to touch the ground. He put it up where I had told him. Koleton turned around, grinning from ear to ear,jumping up and down with such excitement, and said "I did it Grammie-I did it!!! I never let it touch the ground...not once. I love the flag-Gram!!!!"

The National Parks are great for that! Making the kids Junior Park Rangers after participating in the raising and lowering of the Flag. Very Coool!

The Girls Scouts are good for that too.



My second daughter is on the end in the Brownie uniform. This is the Fourth of July parade.

At Girls Scout camp, I learned how (with two people) to fold the flag appropriately so that touching the ground isn't an issue. That's what my two girls did - each evening they lowered the flag and folded it up.

Two of my daughters were involved in Scouts; that picture of the July 4 parade brings back lots of happy memories - I was very involved as a Scout leader during those years. Then, after my kids were grown and gone, I got involved again when I helped start a troop at the school where I taught. Scouting is such a wonderful learning experience for both boys and girls; I can't recommend it enough!
