Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse

Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse - 04/01/00 09:11 PM

I have been thinking about this idea for a while and have decided to use April as the month to do it.

Starting today, April 1st, I will donate fifty cents (.50) to the restoration of the Pottawatomie Lighthouse for every Harbour Light purchased during the month by a fourm participant.

View the story and lighthouse here:
http://www.lhdigest.com/archives/2000/January_2000/pottaw.htm

Here's how it works: Any time you purchase a new or secondary market Harbour Light during the month of April, send me an e-mail letting me know how many you have purchased. I will keep a running total and at the end of the month I will donate .50 for every purchase, up to $75.00, to the Friends of Rock Island, for use in the continuing restoration of the Pottawatomie Lighthouse.

There is no need to tell me which ones you have bought, just let me know how many. I will trust everyone and will use the honor system in this project. Weekly updates will be posted on the donation status.

E-Mail me with your purchase at:

FFEMTR1@aol.com

Included purchases will include, Limited Editions, Open Editions, and Society Pieces.

Pottawatomie is the adopted lighthouse of the Harbour Lights Collectors Club - Great Lakes District, of which I am a member. This is just one fun way to help raise money for the restoration.

Thanks and Keep the Flame!

-Todd

Todd - I think that this is a wonderful idea and have decided to also send you $.50 for every lighthouse which I purchase during this month. Hopefully, others will do the same and we can increase the monies for Pottawatomie's restoration.

Hey Todd,

Count my 50 cents for every HL I buy this month in your pot. I will send a check at the end of the month to either your HL club or the group name who is doing the restoration. Please send me the info for the group I should send it to. This is a great idea.

Re: Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse - 04/03/00 05:41 AM

Wow!!!

I must say I didn't expect this! Although with the caliber of collectors we have here, it really isn't that suprising.

At the end of the month, I will be making the donation in the name of the members of the Harbour Lights Collector Forums, not in my name. You folks will have made this possible.

For those of you who are also making your own donation, they can be sent to:

Friends of Rock Island
Pottawatomie Restoration
126 Country Club Drive
Clintonville WI 54929

Or if you prefer, you can send me your check made out to F.O.R.I. and I can send them all together as one donation. Whatever method you prefer is fine.

Todd Shorkey
P.O. Box 272
Bay City MI 48707-0272

Thanks again so much for your support! You are all fantastic!

-Todd

P.S. Don't forget to e-mail me when you purchase a Harbour Light so I can determine my donation!

Todd,

That's a most generous offer! However, You deserve better than "Brass Polisher". I'd much rather see you as (at least) an "Assistant Keeper". Tell ya what: I'll match your donation penny for penny (up to $75). Just send the final count to me, and I'll send a check to you. I'll also include my own purchases in the count. Thanks for the great idea, Todd!

Todd, I think this is a great idea, with people like yourself coming up with clever ways to have fund raisers, the lighthouse restoration project will become a great success. With the HL that I purchase I will send you a $1. each. Thank you for your generosity.

Re: Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse - 04/22/00 10:26 PM

Only a little more than a week to go in this fund raiser. I will be posting the final totals on May 2nd, after my return from a non-lighthousing vacation, and mailing the donation to F.O.R.I. on May 10th. This will give anyone who was going to send an additional or matching donation time to do so.

Week number 3 totals are 40 Harbour Lights purchased by 9 collectors.

Remember to e-mail me with the number of Harbour Lights you purchased in April if you haven yet done so.

Thanks,

-Todd

Re: Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse - 05/03/00 01:09 AM

And the results are in!!!

Upon tallying the e-mails, the total reported number of Harbour Lights purchased in April is:

85 !!!

That means my fifty cent per HL donation to the Pottawatomie Lighthouse Restoration is $42.50, but I am going to round that number up to an even $50.00.

Many collectors have indicated that they are also making an individual donation as well, so I do not have a grand total yet. I will post the grand total after May 10th, which I have indicated in an above post as the date I will send the check to F.O.R.I. If any checks arrive after that date, I will gladly forward them to F.O.R.I. as well.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 20 some collectors who made this donation to the Pottawatomie Restoration/Friends of Rock Island possible. You are all wonderful and I thank you for your generosity.

Watch for the final update to follow after May 10th.

Thanks to all,

-Todd

Re: Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse - 05/11/00 08:30 PM

Many wonderful things have happened since this thread was started last month.

Tomorrow, May 12th, I am sending out the donation, but I will not be sending it to F.O.R.I. as originally planned. I am sending it to Jim Johnston who will be presenting the donation to Tim Sweet, Pres. of F.O.R.I. Bill Younger will also be at the presentation. It wasn't planned this way, but it is great that Bill will again see how dedicated his collectors are to lighthouse preservation. Bill is in town for the Door County Lighthouse Walk, Keepers and Kin and Harbour Lights Collectors Club- Great Lakes Dist. meeting.

Currently the donation is just over $200.00, with a few donations still trickling in.

If you wanted to make a donation to the Pottawatomie Lighthouse restoration but forgot, or if you are interested in helping out, you can still send in your donations. The address for Friends of Rock Island is listed above in this thread.

I wish to thank everyone for their donations and for e-mailing me with your Harbour Lights purchases. Without your help, this project would not have been the success that it was. You are truly a great group of people and I am proud to be associated with you all.

If you are going to be in the Door County Area next weekend, be sure to stop in. Also, check out Jim Johnston's post on the opportunity drawing for a set of Little Lights, located over in the Collector Club section of the forums. Money collected in this drawing will go to Pottawatomie as well.

When a final total becomes available, I will be sure to post it here!

Re: Buy a Harbour Light, Help a Lighthouse - 05/11/00 10:54 PM

I also, would like to thank all the collectors involved in Todds fund raiser. Without dedicated people like yourselves, interested in preserving a piece of maritime history, some lighthouses would just crumble away. Taking small steps, one project at a time, helps ease the fiancial burden that comes with restoring a lighthouse. Little by little through donations, fund raisers, grants, the Pottawatomie Lighthouse will be restored to its true beauty. Somewhere down the road it was said that they might even rent a room of the lighthouse out for overnight stays. It'll kinda be like the Rose Island of the Great Lakes. Once again I would like to thank the collectors of Harbour Lights, the Younger family, and the members of the Harbour Lights Collectors Club - Great Lakes District for their continued support in this project.
