Fire Island - 03/23/99 01:43 PM

I am new to HL and need info on Fire Island. I have found a piece that has a GLOW label and the HL #406. Does this make it more valuable or less valubable as a collectible. I have also found a Presque Isle that is signed and has a Nobska label on the bottom. Again, more valuable, or less valuable? Thanks for the help.

Welcome Joanne to the wonderful world of collecting Harbour Lights!! And welcome to the Collector Forums!

Fire Island is one of seven issues that started off life as a GLOW (open edition) but was changed to a limited edtion (9,500) because we collectors didn't like the idea of HL issuing a lighthouse as an open when it was never a limited.

That's the reason Fire Island doesn't have an edition size on the flag. As a GLOW it had a 400 series product number. When it was switched, it was given the product number 176. And eventually another lighthouse was given the 406 product number.

You can learn more about this switch from GLOW to Limited at this page:

www.harbourlights.com/modifications/pages/open2limited.htm

I don't think there is any secondary market difference in value to these pieces either as GLOW or limited. In general an 'error' that can be duplicated by a collector (i.e. put a different sticker on the bottom/box) is not going to appreciate.

Haven't heard of a Nobska label on a Presque Isle before, but all it would take to duplicate would be to call HL and ask for a Nobska label and do-it-yourself.

Thank you St. John for answering my question. I also thank Karen and Mike Powers for leading me in the right direction to find out more about Harbour Lights. Hopefully soon I will be a WACKO.

Joanne,

It's real simple. A couple of times thru this board, once or twice in the chat room and you are stricken with the hidden virus. Viola, you turn into a Wacko. Keep at it, you're rapidly approaching Wachohood. Warning: Once you catch it, there is no cure. But who wants one?

The Ancient Mariner - Old enough to know better but still a Wacko, by choice.
