John Chidester's Internet provider is down again... - 01/23/02 12:00 AM

John called and asked me to post this so everyone would know why he hasn't responded today. He said it has become almost a daily thing lately.. When this message disappears it once again means that John has access to the Internet once more....

I'll leave this message up. The conversion from Excite (@Home.com) has not been smooth for Cox.

Looks like it's running now - but I never know when it will go down.

Maybe you should ask if they have an hourly rate instead of the flat monthly one. The way your service has been the past few days I bet you would save money!

Again this morning, 3 hours down. I don't think a day has gone by since the conversion that there hasn't been SOME down time.

I spent 55 minutes waiting on hold to talk to Cox -- then the service had a spontaneous remission.

Did AOL buy Cox Communications????

Is it Cox Communications or Cox Non-Communications? Just their new way of keeping you from using too many access hours. Aren't you looking forward to when everyone has been changed over and they put a full load on their circuits????

Another outage this evening about 2 hours.

When you call, the messages say:

1) Did you know you can find the answers to most of your questions at the cox web site? (But they don't tell you the URL.)

2) You can send an email to cox and we guarantee a response in 24 hours. (But they don't give you the email address)

3) We're sorry your high speed internet access is out. Please stay on the line and you will be served by the next available support staff member (of the two we actually employ?)

And what the h*** good are the first two messages when from the third message, they know you're calling because your 'high speed' (yeh zero KB/Hour) isn't working

We had that problem for a while right after we first got cable modem service, John. It turned out that the problem was the cable linking the house to the street. The cable service weenies couldn't figure that out... it was their TV guy, who snapped to the problem when we told him that the low # TV channels were having problems too. Replaced the cable and no more problems since. I'm completely empathetic, I know what a major pain in the rear the 0Kb/hr service from those guys can be like!

I stuck with AOL from the start, even through the bad times when it was a real chore to get connected on a weekend night. Then there was the times you would get bounced several times in a session.

I must say that AOL has been wonderful for the last year or so. I always get on the first try and never get bounced anymore.

Call me crazy, but I am in the process of going back to AOL after about a 1 1/2 year absence.

AT&T Worldnet is raising its rates and cutting the number of free hours from 150 per month to 75 per month. Good-bye ATT, hello again AOL. One negitive will be the loss of my Great Lakes Lighthouses and Great Lakes Freighters websites at ATT. Just have to rebuild somewhere else I guess.

Here is my new e-mail address:

EngineerEng1@aol.com

Why that? I am the Engineer on BCFD Engine 1

Todd, with AOL each screen name gets 2mb of web space and you can have up 7 screen names with AOL so with 7 names you can have a minimum of 14mb of web space, but if you link only 1 web page to AOL's hometown they will double your space to 4mb giving you up 28mb of web space. The one page that is linked to hometown will have an AOL banner across the top of the page. You can submit a single page to hometown under each name and have plenty of space. But don't go for AOL's deal of 12mb per name by submitting all your pages to hometown that banner is anoying

The banner across the page in the link is what the hometown pages will have

Thanks Mark,

I will look into AOL's space. I have also been looking at sites like geocities, Tripod, and Yahoo to name a few.

There are many different offers out there to sort through....

Welcome back to AOL, Todd! AOL has been great in my area, no problems at all. Maybe AOL has solved all their problems from the past and put them behind them.

AT&T?? I couldn't wait to get rid of them regarding their digital cable service. They convinced me to sign up for their digital signal because it wa so great. I tried it for two months, wasn't impressed, had them take their digital boxes out, and saw absolutely no change in picture quality between digital boxes and no digital boxes. I save roughly $55 a month by just switching to their best basic service. That money usually pays for four new DVDs each month which I thoroughly enjoy watching and lending to family and friends. My DVD library is now up to around 125 and growing.

John called me at 11:00am today and asked that I pass along that his provider service has been down since 7:00pm last night. He also asked that I remind everybody that the chat is tonight at 10pm Eastern.. He said that Kim Andrews said she was going to try real hard to stop by at tonight's chat...

Returned home from a bunch of errands at 4 PM to find the connection working again.

Hope it will stay up and running until after the chat.
