John,

Where was the photo made for the May Calendar? Was the light through the lense from the rising sun? Who was the keeper? YOu are truly a talennted photographer.

Hmmm. I guess we'll have to open it up for guesses.

Hint #1 - it was a setting sun that 'illuminated' the Fresnel lens.

Hmmm... Setting sun means facing west. Hard to tell, but it appears to be water in the background, so probably west coast. Copyright of 1999 means a recent photo. Likely to be from the Long Beach trip. Various clues (not the least of which is the URL) lead me to believe that it's Sean "The Beav" Thompson in the photo. Let me take a wild guess: Point Fermin? But I don't think that Fermin has a fresnel lens today. Appears to be a third-order lens, maybe fourth-order depending upon camera lens used. Not Point Vicente; that's got a diamond grid lantern. Hmmm... Sean is from San Diego. Could they have met there? Ballast Point? Point Loma? OK. Somebody else take over from here.

A clarification: "Point Loma" lighthouse is is the correct name for what we know as "Old Point Loma".

Not 'Old Point Loma' or 'Ballast Point' (not heard of that one, Art.)

Sean is the 'keeper'. But not of this lighthouse. Point Fermin is the correct guess. End of the day, last to tour the Fermin Lighthouse, the sun actually setting to the Northwest.

Ballast Point lighthouse was in San Diego Harbor and was built to the same style as Pt. Fermin. It was razed in the 60's if memory serves.

I saw Ballast point when I was in San Diego for the '97 Reunion and there's NO SIGN that a lighthouse had ever been there.

I am going to say it is New Point Loma,

Let's study the facts,
#1 Sean is in the Coast Guard and is in the San Diego area !
#2 Sean would probably have access to the lighthouse mentioned above !
#3 The lantern room at New Point Loma has floor to celling window panes without horizontal breaks ! as does the one in the picture !
#4 The guy in the picture is about Sean's size !
#5 New Point Loma has a third order Fresnel lens simmilar to the one in the photo !

As for Ballast Point Lighthouse, it was built in 1890 and torn down in 1960 when it was torn down to make way for a submarine base.according to the Roberts/Jones book "California Lighthouses"

Actually, when I got the photos back from the lab, I thought it was NPL, since I had the pleasure of climbing to the top on this trip also. Then I realized it was the wrong time of day with the setting sun.

Backtracked looking at some other photos and since Point Fermin is the only other one I climbed on this trip to California, it HAD to be PF.

Anyone else want to guess? LOL

I guess I didn't read it John, I read the first part of the thread and went to the HL page to look at the picture and probably glossed over that part when I posted my gumshoe detective work. I just assumed that it wasn't Point Fermin because "why would a inactive light still have a Fresnel lens in place" and not on display somewhere ? In the future I'll try to read at least every other reply

My first guess was Point Loma (older one), but since that wasn't it my second guess is Point Fermin. How'd I do John & Mark?
