Here's the real Top 10 WOW list, folks. Please hold your applause 'til the end.

Alcatraz (1996) for its massive size and use of height.

Cape Canaveral (1996) for the sheer imagination it took to create the rocket blasting off---and lack of breakage issues with the plumes of smoke.

Cape Florida (1998) for its pewter palm trees that represent a big advance in sculpture technology.

Pemaquid Point (1996) because I've been there 10 times and it's probably the most accurate piece in the whole HL line---right down to the brick.

Sanibel (1997) for living up to all the hype (despite some sloppy glueing).

Scituate (1996), like Pemaquid, for its incredible accuracy down to the blue picnic table and lobster buoys. The little pebbles are a nice touch, too.

Southeast Block (1992) for being the most realistic and impressive of the line's formative years (although it was a VERY close call with New London Ledge).

St. Augustine (1993), the jewel in the Southern Belles series.

Thomas Point (1996), not only for its metalwork technology, but also for having the courage to dangle the boat by a real thread.

White Shoal (Xmas 1997) for being the most noticeable piece on store shelves, and its realistic portrayal of Great Lakes ice.

Okay...now the 5 that probably won't make anybody else's list, so here's their 2 seconds of fame:

Matinicus Rock
Mukilteo
Fort Niagara
Saugerties
Toledo Harbor

Well, Bill, I agree mostly with your picks. But let me say I do like Saugerties. It's certainly the winner among the Lady Lighthouse Keepers set of 5, although that series hasn't been a highlight.

I owned Saugerties a couple of years before visiting the real one and it was like deja vu being there after admiring the Harbour Lights sculpture for so long.

Now, I'm not sure it's in my top 10, but it deserves more than 2 seconds of fame IMHO.

My WOW list is 115 long so I won't post them all. Oldest favorites in my collection: New London Ledge, Montauk, and Nauset Light. Newest favorites in my collection are Rose Island, Sturgeon, Grand Haven. Still waiting for my Old Field Christmas piece to compare side-by-side with Big Bay, Colchester, and White Shoals.

My Wow list in numerical order is HL101 thru HLxxx (where xxx = current number)

But singling out a few:

Jefferies Hook (the little red lighthouse and the big gray bridge - how many of you have read this to your children or had it read to you?)

Middle bay (the cow being one of the first touches of occupation)

Alcatraz (no I didn't spend my formative years there. But I do live in the San Francisco Bay Area)

Cape Canaveral (who can mention the Rock without including the Rocket? Besides, before it became Silicon Valley - Space ruled and I am a retired Electronics Engineer who spent his career in outer space)

Sturgeon Bay (No comment. Just like it.)

and last - but not least
Cape Hateras (any way shape or form)

I'm guessing your looking for HL's? If you asking about real LHs, it's a very different list.

Here's My View
1. Thomas Point, Drum Point, & Middle Bay (TIE - How can you separate them?)
2. Montauk Point
(The End - It's a homer pick but still a Classic)
3. Cape Canaveral
(How different but cool can you get?)
4. Fire Island
(Another homer Classic.)
5. Sanibel Island
(Just an outstanding, eye catching piece!)
6. Spyglass & Thumbnails & Christmas Ornaments
(How can you not love the detail of these little Gems?)
7. Alcatraz
(THE ROCK - By your definition a WOW!)

REAL LIGHTHOUSES
1. Montauk Point
2. Cape Hatteras
3. Currituck Beach
4. Chatham
5. Bass Harbor
6. Bald Head Island
7. Statue of Liberty

Re: Post Your WOW !! List - 11/10/98 05:00 PM

When I tried to think about my list I went home last night and decided to pick the ones that I just seemed to look at the most and list why. Let me preface this list with I love them all and really enjoy studying and admiring all of the LH's (all 150 some). With that in mind my list is in more-or-less issue order:

Cape Canaveral since you can look at it an keep noticing new things in all the detail and it brings up an image of the area.

Sandy Point since I have seen it and read a fair amount about it and when I look at it I just wonder off into Cheasapeake caisson LH designs and history.

Thomas Point because Harbour light ability to portray of the uniqueness of the screwpile design and the LH's great detail and innovative techniques.

Middle Bay in the same vein as Thomas Point but the figure in the boat and cow make it special.

Sanibel Island for the detail, construction techniques, and the attention to detail and little things that portray the LH and the Florida athmosphere.

Cape Henry for the ability to represent both LH's in good detail, very realistically to the actual LH's, and it gives a good feel to the actual environment they are in.

Gray's Harbor not so much that it stands out from any others, although it is well done, but it brings back great memories of the Westport, WA area and the lighthouse itself.

Cape Florida for the detail, presentation of the actual setting and ability to create a southern athmosphere.

Tillamook Rock for the ability to create a feeling of the actual area where it sits along with the incredible detail of the piece.

White Shoals for the attention to detail and the ability to portray a cold nothern feeling.

Although these are my top 10 I would include the following as honorable mentions for their own unique reasons.

Cape Hatteras (original and mold 2)
Point Arena
Pemaquid
Cape Elizabeth
Tybee (GLOW)
LS Chesapeake
