LOST SCREWPILE LIGHTHOUSE RESURRECTED - 05/19/03 01:07 AM

The following is a message received for our Chesapeake Chapter of the USLHS that I though might be of interest to all of you. Particularly if you will be in the area in the future.

"LOST SCREWPILE LIGHTHOUSE IS RESURRECTED --
In March the new Stingray Point Replica Lighthouse was completed. The latest
rebirth of a lost lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay Area is located next to
the water on the premises of the Sting Ray Point Marina, in Deltaville, VA,
approximately 1.6 miles due west from the original lighthouse site. It is a
hexagonal, single dormer, screwpile design. The group acquired the
necessary drawings (including the 1858 elevation drawings and 1884 measured
drawings created by the USLHE) and old photos, and the remaining screwpile
structure, which now supports an automatic light, was measured to confirm
consistency with the drawings. A Virginia architect developed working
drawings from these documents, rigorously adhering to the structure and
dimensions of the original. A number of artifacts, none original to
Stingray Point but dating to the late nineteenth century, have been
collected. These include a 5th order, drum type Fresnel lens, a bronze fog
bell, and a circa 1880 bell striking mechanism. It was a beautiful job well
done. It would be worth a side trip to view the light if you are in that
general area; perhaps those taking the New Point Comfort cruise may like to
include Stingray Point in their itinerary."

I am going to plan a trip to see it ASAP.

Bob, there are so many lost lighthouses on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, that you can't count them on all of your fingers and toes. There is a good book on them; "Forgotten Beacons, The Lost Lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay" by Patrick Hornberger & Linda Turbyville, Eastwind Publishing, Annapolis, Maryland.

Plus, you can also go to our chapter site as Sweetpshirin pointed out and see a list of some of them.

Thanks for the referral on the Book, Joyce. I remember about a year+ ago looking at a map that had all the lhs plotted in the Chesapeake area - Probably done by the Chesapeake Chapter. What I was surprised at is I never heard of this one (the process) being replicated. I guess I just missed it.
Congrats to all.

ps Is this one on land ala Hooper Strait at the Museum?

The newsflash says it is next to the water at the Sting Ray Point Marina. We may go this Sunday, weather permitting. It has been a few lousy, rainy weekends in a row here. And right now, the forecast doesn't look too good. If we go, I will let everyone know how it is.
