Postal Insurance ?? - 07/25/03 10:40 PM

On May 1st I won a Harbour Light that arrived to my home broken in two pices. I did pay the extra $2.30 for insurance thank god. Well it only took me 79 days to get the check from the Post office after filling a claim. They even included the shipping costs also. So the next time you are offered insurance take it, it's well worth the small cost. But it's a long process. Ron

The 79 days is what I don't care for. The two times that I have collected from UPS, it took 10 and 13 days plus the 1st $100 coverage is included in the cost of shipping. It is only a $1.00 for each additional $100 coverage.

USPS is still the better deal... Why?
1.USPS % of claims filed vs UPS is much lower
2.If you are lucky enough to dodge the proper packing issue with UPS the 10-13 days will get you a check but the process to determine packing issues with UPS is a long one 30-50 days in some cases then add an additional 10-13 to get your check. This is worst case.
3.Following packing rules as listed at the UPS store does not always insure you will not have a packing issue problem in final claim determination by UPS. WHY? the proper packing procedure listed by UPS is not product type specific but the UPS claims inspection process regarding packaging is!
4.If you ship USPS priority mail the service is much better for not that great a difference in price and in general the handling by USPS of priority mail is MUCH BETTER.
5.UPS charges extra for residential delivery.UPS is a B to B provider in set up and company culture.
5. The total number of times a package is handled by UPS at HUB points is in most cases twice that
of USPS hence the % difference of claims filed.Less handling equals less opportunity for damage.

Now to the credit of UPS given the total daily volume they handle compared to USPS they do a great job! While each individual experiance will be different I have never filed a claim with USPS. I have filed several claims with UPS.
For B to B my choice is UPS for residential I always pick USPS.
