Which of your HL would you rescue from the floods - 07/19/07 06:00 PM

Since this country is currently having a real problem, with people having to rescue their posessions from the floods, I wondered ...

Which of your Harbour Lights would you rescue, if you could take only one or two?

I would be hard pushed to name a favourite HL. But if you asked me, which I would resuce if I had to leave in a hurry ... well I guess that would be the Point Loma Lights. We have HL605, the Point Loma First Re-Union special ... and it is signed by Bill. And we have the LLOM of the old Point Loma light. And I am very pround of HL605 and very sentimental about the LLOM.

I have, on occasion, thought about this. My first collectible to be rescued would be a David Winter cottage called "Arches Thrice". After that, my first HLs would probably be Sandy Point, NJ, and Barnegat Light NJ since they are in an easy location to grab.

However, there are some books and lots of photo albums I would grab before the collectibles.

I would have to say that it would be my original Cape Hatteras(thanks Sandy) and my Coquille River.

Let's hope this never happens, but if I had to choose it would probably be "Sharps Island". Not only is that my last name, but it is the first Harbour Lights that I ever purchased and the one that got me into this crazy collection.

I would hate to think of it ever happening. But if I could only rescue one, then it would have to be the Portland Head Gaurdian of the Night. It was my first HL and was given to me as a gift from two very special friends of ours, one of which past away a couple of years ago. I am very protective of it now. So it would be the first one I'd save.

I won a master's original of Waugaschance(?) at the Reunion in Mackinac two years ago. It looks like it's made out of compressed sand, but if I had to grab one in a hurry, that would be it.

All 345 of mine would be moved to the attic and that's the 3rd story of this house. If the water reaches that level, I wouldn't be around to be bothered by losing them--I can't swim!!

Good one Sandy! You'll need to store a little inflatable dingy ... big enough to take you, your loved ones and 345 lighthouses biglaugh

Well, given the circumstance, I would grab POINT BETSY because it was the first lighthouse I saw that got me involved with this hobby. If allowed a second it would be FAIRPORT because that was the first light my wife climbed with me. And if I could stuff a 3rd under my shirt, it would be OLD POINT COMFORT because a very good friend and his wife took us to see it. He died a few years later and that is one of the good times I remember spending with him.

As I am 800+ ft above sea level and on a hillside, rain caused flooding, except for some subsurface seepage through my back basement wall, should never be a problem. Oddly, we have been in a record setting 'Stage 3' level drought all summer here in central Alabama. Our traditional spring rains, with tornado warnings, never happened.

I guess given just a few minutes warning, I'd opt for our inside-only cats first (They are family!), photo albums second, my firearms third (My responsibility to keep them out of the 'wrong' hands.), computers (Hard drives... too many irreplaceable names/addresses, etc.), etc. Sadly, my collectibles - even my beloved LGB trains - would be way down the list. My wife's Harmony Kingdom 'Treasure Jests', ~229 of them, would be well ahead of the H-L's. Probably the one H-L I'd consider grabbing would be Middle Bay, AL. The NL, CT GLOW that started this madness would be be left, for sure!
