What a mess in NYC, but as far as I know, Massachusetts was uneffected. The AC is still on!

You hear about the two blondes in Bloomingdales?

They were trapped on an escalator for 3 hours.

Power out at 4:15 PM, just came back up at 11:45 PM here. At least it wasn't days. I think we should just blame it all on Canada this time.

I was sitting in my office when everything went black! My office doesn't have any windows, so I had a heck of a time getting out of the office! It took me twice as long to get home as usual. Having no traffic lights was a bit frightening, plus the fact that because of the blackout everyone left work at the same time, so the roads were jammed.

Power came back on about 3:30 this morning. About only half of Long Island has power right now, but it is expected to be fully restored by noon today. Parts of NYC still don't have any power. There are no subways or train service in NYC or LI yet and probably won't be restored until this evening.

Cell phone lines were jammed. It was very difficult to make a phone call.

Just enjoyed an evening under candle and lantern power.

Re: Power Outages in the Northeast - 08/15/03 01:50 PM

I was on my way home from the gym and luckily only 2 traffic lights away from home when the power went out. I didn't have the radio on to hear what was going on so I just figured some nut had run into a telephone poll or something that took down some power lines as well. So I went home and had a nap. When I got up and the power was still out I had no clue as to what time it was so I figured it was just a quick power nap. Sean came home a few minutes later and clued me in to what was going on. We ended up having our first candle light dinner at a little pizza place not too far from out apartment. He was hotter than anything in there but at least it was food! Power went back on around 10PM.
This morning drove into work as there was no message on our voicemail serice mentioning that our site was closed. No problem, no one was on the roads and all looked fine until I got closer to work in Ardsley, NY. There the traffic lights on the Sawmill Parkway were out and I couldn't turn left across the highway to get to work. So I took a drive further south into Yonkers and took a winding back road that connected me to where I needed to go. Only a 20 minute detour. Then of course I get to work and the rest of the town has power just not the campus I work on. Oh darn! The security guard just sent me home. LIke I was going to complain. I was fortunate in this whole experience not to have been very put out of my ways. However I'm so glad I'm not in NYC! No subway or trains even now so all of those people who were stuck in the city last night are still stranded.

Power out here at 4:10 PM and back up between 1:00 and 3:00 AM this morning. I did find out that the solar powered lighthouse works as a nice nightlight inside too.

We were lucky this time. Had a few brownouts just about the time it happened and one a bit later but that was it. A few miles down the road my ex lost power for about 5 hours.

My folks in Port Huron Michigan have been out of power since 4:15 PM yesterday. They say it might be restored this weekend.

The focus has been on NYC, but lots of other places are out also.

Re: Power Outages in the Northeast - 08/16/03 02:59 AM

My question-what about all the lighthouses in the areas of the outages? Not all are powered by solar panels!!!

(Yes, it is a stupid comment, but this IS a lighthouse message board!!!)

Can't believe this. I was working in my home office when all of a sudden I heard my fan in my window slow to a halt. My lights dimmed, but did NOT go out, and my Battery Backup went on. Whithin seconds of this occurence, it was back. WIERD!!!

Re: Power Outages in the Northeast - 08/17/03 02:45 PM

We lost our power for 15-1/2 hrs. and considered ourselves fortunate .... a lot of communities in our Detroit area location had to wait considerably longer to get their power back. Fortunately the temperatures in our refrigerator and freezer stayed down low enough that we didn't experience any loss. smile

I agree with Rod ... blame it on "the hosers" to the north of us! Actually looks like the problem(s) started in Ohio and cascaded quickly to Michigan, New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York. eek

Dan,

Glad to hear you weathered it OK.

Also very glad it didn't happen while I was visiting your area last month.

Re: Power Outages in the Northeast - 08/18/03 11:47 PM

Heard on the news today that Virginia just missed out on this one. A grid from Ohio did what it was supposed to do and stopped it from travelling down here. Now, if these thunderstorms would stop and power going in and out constantly, I'll be real happy. Getting tired of resetting all the clocks.
