I still don't know HOW this works, but here's the code from Professor Tim's note in the FSB. copy and paste the area below Replace [ with < and ] with > Note the bold face is the actual words that appear in your 'sideways' post.

Extra credit to those who can do variations on this - like 45 degree angle.

[OBJECT classid="clsid:99B42120-6EC7-11CF-A6C7-00AA00A47DD2" id=lbl1 width=40 height=340 align=left][param name="angle" value="90"][param name="alignment" value="2"][param name="BackStyle" value="0"][param name="caption" value=" Writing Sideways "][param name="FontName" value="Arial"][param name="FontSize" value="24"][param name="FontBold" value="1"][param name="Forecolor" value="#660000"][param name="Bgcolor" value="#DBDBDB"]
[/OBJECT]

Ok Tim, need some input. The bg color doesn't seem to work that well. Is there a way to have a "hidden" or "blank" background, so a background picture will show through? Also, font styles don't seem to adjust either. Is there a tutorial of the class styles or functions anywhere on the net to learn more about them?

-just playing in the basement with explosives again.

I'm flattered you choose to fiddle with my unworthy code. Read on, all is revealed...

The background parm not only doesn't work well, it just doesn't work at all. Its a phony parameter I made up to track where this stuff might show up. :-> (yeah yeah cheap trick, I know) The background is effectively the same as the browser's background. If there is a way to change it or make it transparent' to the background of the item I don't know what it is.

The whole thing is a parlor trick - its the "label" ActiveX control from MS and of course only works with IE, as Netscape doesn't support ActiveX controls. The [OBJECT] element provides a way for ActiveX controls and other media to be embedded directly into HTML documents. ActiveX controls can be created with C++ or easier to learn languages such as Visual Basic, or Delphi from Imprise (nee Borland).

The object insertion mechanism is the subject of a W3C Working draft of the HTML 4.0 spec, available at www.w3.org/pub/WWW/TR/WD-object.html .

Those interested in the use of ActiveX components are encouraged to visit the Microsoft Internet Explorer web site at www.microsoft.com/Windows/ie/Developers/default.asp , where the ActiveX SDK may still be available.

Imo, one is better off staying away from this stuff. Its proprietary to Microsoft, and not an open standard. Good Web design (which I admittedly flagrently violated) allows each user the same basic presentation and does not exclude folks based on their browser choice. 'Course if mozilla (www.mozilla.org) doesn't get off the butt and complete Navigator 5.0, we may end living in an IE world. See Fear and loathing on the merger trail .

Sadly the current Netscape browser (v4.7) is still way behind IE in its support of legitimate Web standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (a good thing to learn) and XML. We may be paying the price of AOL's purchase of Netscape. (AOL = the CA of the Internet.)

Keep the net open and free, adopt open standards. Beware the Bill Gates Mind Ray.

Rgds,

in keeping with our 'teach a man to fish' philosophy here's another quick note:

Go to the Start Button, select 'Run' and input 'regedit', then click OK. When the registry editor comes up, choose 'Find' off the Edit menu, and feed it this string:
99B42120-6EC7-11CF-A6C7-00AA00A47DD2 which is the class id of the label control. Then you can learn a leetle bit more about this ocx, like where its installed.

Cheers,
