I'm flattered you choose to fiddle with my unworthy code. Read on, all is revealed...
The background parm not only doesn't work well, it just doesn't work at all. Its a phony parameter I made up to track where this stuff might show up. :-> (yeah yeah cheap trick, I know) The background is effectively the same as the browser's background. If there is a way to change it or make it transparent' to the background of the item I don't know what it is.
The whole thing is a parlor trick - its the "label" ActiveX control from MS and of course only works with IE, as Netscape doesn't support ActiveX controls. The [OBJECT] element provides a way for ActiveX controls and other media to be embedded directly into HTML documents. ActiveX controls can be created with C++ or easier to learn languages such as Visual Basic, or Delphi from Imprise (nee Borland).
The object insertion mechanism is the subject of a W3C Working draft of the HTML 4.0 spec, available at
www.w3.org/pub/WWW/TR/WD-object.html .
Those interested in the use of ActiveX components are encouraged to visit the Microsoft Internet Explorer web site at
www.microsoft.com/Windows/ie/Developers/default.asp , where the ActiveX SDK may still be available.
Imo, one is better off staying away from this stuff. Its proprietary to Microsoft, and not an open standard. Good Web design (which I admittedly flagrently violated) allows each user the same basic presentation and does not exclude folks based on their browser choice. 'Course if mozilla (
www.mozilla.org) doesn't get off the butt and complete Navigator 5.0, we may end living in an IE world. See
Fear and loathing on the merger trail .
Sadly the current Netscape browser (v4.7) is still way behind IE in its support of legitimate Web standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (a
good thing to learn) and XML. We may be paying the price of AOL's purchase of Netscape. (AOL = the CA of the Internet.)
Keep the net open and free, adopt open standards. Beware the Bill Gates Mind Ray.
