News flash........

The USCG has targeted the year 2006 to replace the aging cutter "Mackinaw". Currently, she is still running in top shape according to Lt. Chris DaBieri, USCG, who went out on the ship a few weeks ago. The Mac is 55 years old and the largest ice-breaker on the Great Lakes.

$5.3 million has been set aside to study construction of a new multi-mission craft to replace the "Mackinaw". Recommendations from the study will go to the USCG for their approval, then to the U.S. Department of Transportation which oversees the Coast Guard.

The cutter is stationed in Cheboygan, MI and was built with the Great Lakes in mind. She starts opening shipping lanes early in March. "Mackinaw" is designed to run through the water, breaking the ice as she hits it and is also equipped with propellers in front to assist in extreme ice conditions.

I have mixed feelings about the retirement of the "Mackinaw". For many living in the Great Lakes region, she is an icon. It will be sad to see her go. On the other hand, it is exciting to think about what new technology will be used to create a modern Great Lakes ice-breaker.

...And the Mackinaw will make a great addition to the Michigan Lighthouse Museum -- Charlevoix Venue (an easy drive from Mackinaw City.)

Perhaps we'll be able to charter her a few years down the road for a nice cruise of Great lakes Lighthouses!

Seen Her many times. Hate to see her go. Wow, a thought. Anchor Bay, The Mackinaw, Breaking through an ice pack. What a georgeous tribute that would be. Don't you agree? Could this be the first Anchor Bay Christmas Piece?
