I just found out about this...although it looks like old news.
This was a lighthouse whose former owners made it very hard to get a peek, nevermind a visit.

This is really fantastic to see. This is a light that deserves some quality care, and I hope that the NLMS can provide that.

With the New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation taking over preservation at the Ledge, and APLS having completely restored Avery Point, it's amazing to think how much the New London Harbor lights have advanced since I first visited them in 2003. A really great success story, I think.

Visit the New London Maritime Society Web site: nlmaritimesociety.org for details about the new Sentinels on the Sound: Celebration of New London's Lighthouse Heritage weekend, July 1-3, 2011. http://www.nlmaritimesociety.org/2011LighthouseWeekend.html
It's going to be regional, with exhibits, a lighthouse symposium, boat tours, visits inside New London Harbor Light, the opening of Ledge Light's new Information Center (within the lighthouse), a shoreline lighthouse bicycle tour, and more!

Sentinels on the Sound
New London’s Lighthouse Heritage Weekend
http://www.nlmaritimesociety.org/2011LighthouseWeekend.html
Friday through Sunday, July 1-3, 2011

More lighthouses can be seen from the lantern of New London Harbor Light than from any other spot on earth.

Last fall, the New London Maritime Society http://www.nlmaritimesociety.org/index.html took on stewardship of New London Harbor Light. The lighthouse was built 251 years ago and is the oldest lighthouse in Connecticut, the 4th oldest in North America.
The current tower was built in 1801--210 years ago.

This summer, to celebrate New London's lighthouse heritage, we are hosting a Lighthouse Weekend of exhibitions, tours and events. We will add details to the Web page as they are announced.

The lighthouse weekend & new exhibition are made possible by a generous grant from the Connecticut Humanities Council.
