Lighthousing the Saginaw River: The Saginaw River Rear Range Light or Saginaw River Light Station as some call it.

Well, the story is not quite as exciting as last year, the weather was much colder. I didn't fear falling through the ice on the Saginaw River walking to the lighthouse like I did last year.

See the related posts of mine to this lighthouse:

Here are the pictures I took this year. The temps were in the single digits with the wind chill below zero, and I had bright sunlight!

Nice pics, Todd. Not as much fun to read about as last year's version though. I especially like the photo entitled "Saginaw River Light Station: Bay City, MI"

My favorite: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=45392&a=1643223&p=15677657

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent job Todd. I like this years shots alot, with the blue sky and nice shadows. It definately pays to keep going back to lights over and over, when possible. It's amazing how much different they can look on different days.

Thanks Todd for the nice pictures. I'm almost positive I will never get anywhere near this light and I appreciate you sharing

Well done Todd! Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. Somehow, having lived my life entirely in the Deep South, I cannot even imagine what it must be like going outdoors in sub-zero windchill conditions. Guess I'll leave that experience to y'all in the Frozen Nauth!

Great job Todd! I agree with Art on the best picture. Love the perspective you got - good framing.

Hey Todd, ... I hope you wear your survival suit when crossing the frozen river. You never know when you might take a dip!

It's funny Brent. It really wasn't all that long ago that the Saginaw River actually started freezing over. It used to remind me a lot of the Cuyahoga River. The river and bay have really cleared up in the last five or so years though. It is amazing what those tiny little pests called Zebra Mussels can accomplish.

Up until last week, there was 8 to 10 inches of ice and literally thousands of fishermen out there. Today, the ice and snow are gone. The river is wide open.

Bob, no survival suits here. My department is a little hesitant to loan them out...LOL. I've trained enough over the years to know better than to take chances. That cold water is a rush though. It doesn't matter have many times you have been in the ice water, it is still a rush when you jump in. Even with the suit. We have fun though.

Earlier in the year at first ice, we were out training on the river downtown where everyone could see us. There we were, four of us jumping up and down on the ice trying to break through. What a sight that must have been to the passing motorists. Four grown men in bright yellow Mustang Suits, bouncing up and down on a partially frozen river. Who says work isn't fun!

Perhaps the Saginaw never used to freeze over, but did it ever catch fire?
