The Portland Press Herald reports today that the tower at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse will be open for visitors to climb...the first time that's happened in 175 years.

This ain't a one-time thing, either. They say the tower will be open for tours for as long as there are volunteers to tend it.

I'll be there this Monday for the Maine State Quarter Ceremony. I'm looking forward to the trip as I've not been to many Maine lights. Most of the ones I've seen in Maine were from a boat not close up.

Awesome! Last night, a friend and I were mapping out our trip to Maine in a couple of weeks...I think we had Pemaquid on our list. If not, it definitely is now!

Shirin - If you have never been to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse you are in for a treat! The scenery at this location is absolutely breathtaking! laugh smile laugh

Yes, the tower at Pemaquid Point will be open for tours this year thanks to the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, A new chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation.

The Maine Quarter Launch Ceremony on Monday, June 9th at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse promises to be a memorable moment in lighthouse history!

There will be music, a school choir, a handbell choir, the National Anthem, the Maine State Song! Speakers including: Tim Harrison, President of the American Lighthouse Foundation, Tom Wilcox, Executive Director of the Maine Maritime Museum, Kip Files, Captain of the Victory Chimes (the ship sailing past Pemaquid on the new Maine Quarter), Maine Governor Baldacci, Maine State Treasurer, Dale McCormick, and the Director of the U.S. Mint, Henrietta Holsman Fore.

What a fantastic lighthouse event this will be!
Volunteers from the Friends of Pemaquid Point Light will be handing out chocolate quarters and also a new Maine State Quarter for a $2 donation to the Friends.

Shirin, I'll see you there Monday - I'm told to arrive early to get a parking space as space is limited!

Best,
Paul Conlin

MJ and I will be there along with our granddaughter, Lexis. We are looking forward to seeing you all there.

This morning we will leave for the LH Depot to do some shopping and start our trek to find some of the "Lighthouses on Parade" between Wells and Portland. Tomorrow more of the same along with a few lighthouse pictures.

Fortunately we will be staying at the Hotel Pemaquid on Sunday night (one block from the lighthouse) and shouldn't have a problem with traffic getting into that area.

I am very proud that New England Lighthouse Lovers (NELL) members painted the tower with a fresh coat of white paint and installed new beadboard inside the entryway last year and that the Friends of Pemaquid Point LH completed the inside and installed displays. Both groups are chapters of American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF).

As Paul said, "What a fantastic lighthouse event this will be!" See you all there.
