Day One
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/Presque.jpg

It is great to be able to start out lighthousing by going to a lighthouse that we haven't been to before...

Presque Island

Of course it would have been a little nicer if it hadn't been raining, but that is when a lighthouse is needed more.... much more than on a sunny day!!

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/fungus.jpg

Sue spotted this fungus growing on a log across the road from the entrance to the lighthouse grounds...

Have you ever tried shooting in the shade, in the rain with an umbrella to keep the rain off the camera but trying not to block the little light coming through the leaves on to your subject?

Well I have, now!
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/Lascas.jpg

A Wacko dinner is next in order...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/mombo.jpg

Wow... and I do mean Wow™!

Mombo ordered the small seafood platter, enough food for the whole group..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/sue.jpg

Sue and JJ's wife, Kathy, both enjoyed the scrod and put up with gathered Wacko's...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/JJ.jpg

Speaking of Wacko's... JJ was all a "Glow" while enjoying his spicy Italian dish..

Looks like your having a great time Paul. The last time I had Scrod was on the bus trip to Cape Cod at the last Reunion. Yep we had "Scrod on the Cod".

Looks like a glass of water with that seafood platter Mombo?

Noticably absent from the photos are Paul's large plate(s) of food! I.O. was also in attendance but somehow didn't manage to make it into the pictures. Nice getting together for a little pre-reunion reunion!

Mombo, IO seems to be a lot like Nile's ex-wife on Frasier...you hear about her but you never get to see her Paul, Sue, JJ... was there really an IO with Sue...

Day Two
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/JJ_home.jpg

Getting ready to get on the road from JJ's... next stop Lighthousing
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/Johnston1.jpg

Wait a minute... Jim Johnston (with a 't') must have opened some Hallmark stores carrying Harbour Lights and in Jim Johnson's (without a 't') territory.
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/Johnston2.jpg

This store didn't have HL even though it says so on the website.. I must remember to call Zina on Monday to let her know..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/flag.jpg

The tributes to the fallen Americans are everywhere in the Empire state. This is at a plaza on the way to Albany along the turnpike. We traveled the back roads as well and the support is along every inch of the way...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/salamacks.jpg

We did stop and do R@R at Salamacks in Schenectady, right outside of Albany, NY
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/r_r.jpg

One item they still had....... a full Stamp set #A445 plus some other nice retired lights.
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/quality.jpg

We arrived at the Quality Inn in Albany to meet up with fellow United States Lighthouse Society members gathering for a tour down the Hudson river and several lights on Long Island.
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/Dave1.jpg

USLS Dave Snyder updates the group at a gathering about changes that there will be in the tour.... a couple of security changes which could end up being a positive since the lights we will attempt to replace a couple we can't visit are one's that we wanted to see more..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/tour.gif

The basic tour is still the same as the map...

Day Three

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/bus.jpg

We all board the Brown Tour Coach... number 88
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/boat.jpg

We beat the Ductch Apple to the dock since they ran into patches of morning fog coming down the Hudson river..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/boat2.jpg

What a day... as we head down the smooth as glass water to our first lighthouse Hudson-Athens..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/hudson1.jpg

Our hosts at the lighthouse are waiting our arrival...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/tony.jpg

While attempting a very tricky docking of the Dutch Apple.. "Man over board was heard following a splash... young Larry had slipped off of the edge of the boat while handling the stern line.
He was not the worst for wear... just red-face and as he told me, the water was really cold....
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/boat3.jpg

The view from the lanternroom was very enjoyable... gorgeous day!!
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/Hudson11.jpg

Our hosts at the light wish us a great trip abnd we are on our way down the Hudson...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/Saugerties.jpg

Everybody was really enjoying the chance to relax on the Dutch Apple and swap lighthouse stories...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/Saugerties4.jpg

While half of the group learns about the restoration and saving of the Saugerties lighthouse from destruction
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/Saugerties5.jpg

the other half enjoys the corn chowder and pea soup for lunch on the ajoining island...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/daisy.jpg

The fauna was as beautiful as the day..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/Saugerties1.jpg

I thanked the Captain for arranging to have the sailboat come by the lighthouse as we were leaving... to help the pictures...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/Saugerties2.jpg

Quite a site and quite a light!
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/esopus.jpg

We took a cruise by Esopus Meadows before docking at Kingston, NY... they are really coming a long on their restoration work on the lighthouse..

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/round2.jpg

The Captain did a masterful job docking the boat in a spot that seemed to be half the length of the big boat..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/round3.jpg
We all then were shuttle out on a smaller (water taxi type) boat, was named the Indy 7, by the way, to Roundout Lighthouse for a tour of the light..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day3/westpt.jpg

When we arrived at the Hotel Thayer on West Point property we went through a full inspection.... a sign of the heighten security

Day Four
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/thayer.jpg

We had a very nice stay at the Thayer Hotel, located on the edge of the West Point Academy property... now back on the road.

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/bearbridge.jpg

We are going across the Bear bridge to board the Dutch Apple which had to dock off of the base property..

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/westptfog.jpg

First, a look across the Hudson river at the fog shrodded Academy....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/dutchapplefog.jpg

Then we board the Dutch Apple for the rest of the cruise to the Big Apple!

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/leavewestpt.jpg

Lighthouse Society members with a last look at foggy West Point....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/bearbridgefog.jpg

The difference from yesterday's weather is dramatic.... but beautiful.

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/swan.jpg

The captain picked up a pilot to help guide him down the river for a while....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/coast1.jpg

While three of their mates inspect the boat.... these two members of the Coast Guard travel along side.

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/coast2.jpg

After we pass inspection, it's back in their boat....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/coast3.jpg

Then they bid us farewell and good wishes....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/stoneypt.jpg

First lighthouse of the day that we pass is Stoney Point Light

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/foghudson.jpg

The river was at times eerie to look at, but the contrast from the beautiful sunny day before was an enjoyable experience....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/tarry3.jpg

We approach another lighthouse in the morning fog....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/tarry.jpg

It's Tarrytown lighthouse...

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/tarry2.jpg

We got a brief moment of sunshine as we pass the beautifully kept lighthouse...

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/gwbridge.jpg

A huge American flag welcomes people crossing the George Washington bridge...

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/jeff2.jpg

Next lighthouse the little red lighthouse....

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/jeff3.jpg

We receive just a bit of sunlight as we passed Jeffrey's Hook...

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/liberty.jpg

A quick stop at Liberty Park for a view of Lady Liberty.... another brief moment of some sun.

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/DayFour/depot.jpg

The tour included a tour of the site of the National Lighthouse Center & Museum....

Thanks Paul and Sue,
I really enjoyed your pictures of your trip. I'm a former New Yorker. I've sailed up and down the Hudson many times on the sloop "Clearwater" and it sure was a treat to see those pictures of those lighthouses.
You did a nice job. Thanks again, Joan

Day Five
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/busfield.jpg

First stop, Old Field...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/oldfield.jpg

Old Field wasn't on the original route but it was a very pleasant replacement... Sue liked Oldfield a lot, in fact she said, "I could live there!"
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/mapfield.jpg

Figuring out just where Old Field is on Long Island....
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/fieldtower.jpg

The tree is in the right place but I guess it should now be an evergreen tree..

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/islip.jpg

We all got to add to our lighthouse viewing totals... as the town of Islip had about four lighthouses on each side of the street in their downtown area...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/fireisland.jpg

Next stop, Fire Island... Bob Scoope met us there and gave Dave some tips for Wednesday's lighthouse viewing on the LI..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/fireisland2.jpg

In spite of the rain it is still a great visit to Fire Island...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/firehall.jpg

Tour of the lighthouse and climb of the tower is next..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/firestairs.jpg

I believe it was mentioned 184 steps to the top, or in that area..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/fireview.jpg

Very nice view of Long Island from the top... it was raining but the tower protected us on the one side.
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/fred.jpg

Several of us chipped in and got Fred, our great bus driver, the proper garb to wear ... Lighthousing.
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/montauk.jpg

Fred, now wearing his Fire Island shirt, delivered us to the end of Long island and Montauk...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/montaukbell.jpg

Looking from the front of the lighthouse to where they surf-fish off of the Point..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/fresnel.jpg

They have some Great Fresnels at Montauk..
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/daisy.jpg

This is for Mo! She loves flowers...
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/streetlight.jpg

On the walk from the town of Montauk back to our Hotel... a Fabulous Sunset.
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/sunset.jpg

The bus loading up for the short trip to dinner... Oh yeah- a Great Sunset!!!
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_five/harbourlights.jpg

Dave handing out prizes.... provided by none other than Harbour Lights... I think there is a postcard that goes with this lighthouse...

Paul, did you see Mike, the Lightkeeper, at Hudson-Athens? Too bad you couldn't have docked at West Point and had a tour but given the situation ...

Stony Point Lighthouse is actually on a peninsula:

Thanks Paul and Sue for taking the time during your trip to keep us posted on how your trip is going. One of the nice things about the forums is being included via the internet on the many trips and functions fellow members partake in. Thanks again for the great shots and enjoy the rest of your trip. Patty and I can't wait to see you two at the reunion.

Sue & Paul,

Not sure where your plan is taking you but just to give you a heads up in case you wish to stop by.

Bill Younger will be at the following two locations this weekend and NELL will be setting up a recruitment table at each event. Sat. Sept. 29 at Lighthouse Depot in Wells, ME from 1-4 PM and then Sun. Sept. 30 at Marvel Shop in New London, CT from 1-3 PM(just off Interstate Rt. 95).

Stop by and say hello if you get a chance.

Day Eleven
http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_11/hooperisle1.jpg
Six Wackos start out the drizzly morning boarding a boat at Hooper Island and, guess what, our first lighthouse is Hooper Island Lighthouse!

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_11/sharps3.jpg
Next stop, Sharp's Lighthouse. Hmmm....still leans!

http://216.46.163.97/basket/in_basket/road/day_11/bloody4.jpg
Then on to Bloody Point Light.....almost a twin to Sharp's but it does not tilt as badly.

On to Mecca! Even our Captain was heard to comment that it is a pretty lighthouse.

A look at Cove Point from the water. Most of us have seen this lighthouse from the land but not from the water.

This is the only remaining evidence of the former location of Cedar Point Lighthouse ....it was a sad moment

Last but not least, Point No Point Lighthouse which was in very good condition.

Name this mystery lighthouse photographer at Thomas Point lilghthouse.

What tour company did you use? I'm looking to go on one in the spring. Maybe the locals on the board could get something together.

I recognize at least 8 folks in the picture at Concord. Could we get a list of names to go with that picture? Or those present could identify themselves? Thanks.

Nice pic, Paul...we're just about on our way to Baltimore. Hopefully, we can beat the traffic and be there by 1400 hours.

See you soon!
