Nice shots, Jim! I imagine you are enjoying living close to all the Florida lights, too. Would I love to live in your neck of the woods!

Nice pics, Jim !!!
Great shot of Cape Canaveral. Gives me a better idea of the distance between the lighthouse and where the shuttles take off.

Lighthouse Loon, I believe those launch pads are NOT the ones the shuttles are launched from. There are many launch pads, some are for the Air Force rockets and some are not used any longer.

I do believe the shuttle is launched from Cape Canaveral. The lighthouse is on Cape Canaveral Air Station. And, the two entities do not always play well together.... They are side by side, but the complex is extremely large and there are gantries all over the place. NASA launches the shuttle, the AF launches most (if not all) other rockets as I recall.

You are right Dave. I was looking for some pictures I have from the ocean view, but they only show a few of them, as I was mostly trying to get the lighthouse in view.
Von Braun use to climb the lighthouse to watch the early rockets go off near by.

Shuttles are definately launched at Cape Canaveral, I watched a takeoff last summer on TV. Eric is right that those launch pads in the pic are not for the shuttles, but for the old style rockets we remember in the 60's and 70's. The shuttle is launched witin sight of the lighthouse.

The AF still uses those gantries to launch the "old fashioned" rockets. They put more things up into space than NASA does, I believe. Most people think the place is just one complex, but it is actually two independent entities with similar missions.
