The title says it all - remnants of the spring snow squall on our visit to the Statue of Liberty. I have several photos I will be uploading to my online portfolio, but I wanted to share a couple to whet your appetite for this incredible visit I had with this one of a kind Lady. I will get the details up about my visit here shortly.

This close-up of the torch with the snowflakes was taken right in front as you walk around Liberty Island - I had my 70-200 lens on and this was a handheld shot. No time and too many people to tripod.

And from the ferry boat on the return to New Jersey, with the Manhattan skyline in the background.

More to come!

It's always an emotional occasion visiting Lady Liberty and Ellis Island, isn't it? Your picture with the Manhattan skyline is gorgeous but that shot of the Lady's arm and the falling snowflakes is just too fantastic for words, Jen. Too, too cool!! Wow!!!

Grace, it was indeed emotional. For me, even though I had no ancestry that I'm aware of that came through Ellis Island between 1892-1924, since I am as passionate about my genealogy as I am lighthouses, it gave me a real appreciation for the purpose that it served. And Lady Liberty is a presence all in her own.

Lady Liberty can be an emotional occasion but when I was on the NY Lighthouse Harbor Cruise last year I found the NYC skyline sans the Trade Towers even more emotional. frown mad

Any news if the government is going to let people climb past the pedestal again? I was not happy when I found out my donation to re-open the statue stop at the bottom of the Statue itself, instead of the head mad and really I would like to see the arm re-open now that part is safe (before the remodel of the 1980's it was considered too weak). Can you imagine the view from the torch? cool It has been a long time, but I see no reason that special tours could not include it.

Jen the snowflake picture is truely cool. cool

Eric, I doubt that they will let you up past the top of the pedestal anymore. They have installed glass viewing areas so you can look up inside of her, but that's it. The torch, I understand, has been closed since 1916.

Here is a wide angle shot of Liberty from the front. If you look at the dark cloud behind her, that is what produced the remaining snowflakes for the torch shot I captured.

A close-up of the head and crown.

Independence Day!

And another wide angle shot from the other side. You can see the remnants of snow on the grass here. The sun flare was intentional - I thought it gave a neat effect.

Great pics of the S.O.L.! I especially like the full view pics.

The only problem with the snowflakes pic is the fact that if you show that pic to someone and did not tell them the whites spots were snowflakes against a clear blue sky, they would think there was something wrong with the pic.

You certainly did capture something rare, for sure.

Very nice pictures Jen. I have been to NY quite a few times the past few years but haven't been over to the SOL since June of 2001. On Sept. 7, 2001, I left on a cruise out of New York harbor. It was gorgeous cruising by the SOL and the NY skyline in the late afternoon. I was enjoying taking some nice pictures from the water.

Little did I know at the time that the WTC towers would be gone and I would be stuck in Montreal, Canada waiting for the airport to open back up. frown Lots of sad days on the cruise ship when there were so many New Yorkers on board.
