Here are a couple of photos of the Old Southport Lighthouse in Kenosha. These were shot last week on my way over to watch and photograph the vintage Gran Prix races at Road America in Elkhart Lake. Like most of the rest of you on these forums, I can't drive past or through a town with a lighthouse in it without stopping to photograph it! The decorative wrought iron gates over the entryway to the light tower even commemorate the lighthouse! Finally, while I was there, I had to grab a shot of the pier light in Kenosha. The light was lousy, but... Gary

Sorry, Larry. I guess the difference between an amateur photographer and a professional is the size of the garbage can. That post of the Kenosha pier light is what I would categorize as a record shot. I took it only because I didn't have any photographs of that pier light and wanted one for my screensaver colleciton. Unlike the Shanklins, I haven't photographed every light in the US but I'm working on it.

Gary, Did you have a lens hood on the pier shot?

Yes, Rod. That was shot with my Nikkor 300 mm f4 AFS that has an integral lens hood that telescopes out. I suspect that that was what caused the vignetting that you didn't ask about.

I have a zoom lens that does it wide open, alot worse though. Can't seem to find a hood that works well. I'll probably end up using an accordian hood, so I can adjust it a bit wide open. Kinda sucks when it's a built-in doing it, but an easy fix in Photoshop when it happens on an otherwise perfect shot, though.

I agree- they are all pretty nice shots (by my standards!) I love that iron gate. I don't think I have evere seen anything like it on another tower...
