It's hard to believe that a year has passed since I sent in the application to volunteer at Big Sable. The eagerly anticipated day is quickly approaching and we will be working at Big Sable from Oct 3 - 17. We seem to have a great group of people who are working with us as fellow keepers. It might be a little chilly but I can't imagine a nicer time to be working there. Although it's now offically closed for the season, I'm hoping as a perk we can get in to climb Little Sable during our afternoon off the secomd week.

Given the fact that we are "almost" there anyway, I decided it would nice add a pre-adventure adventure to the upper penisula and see some lighthouses up there. My itinerary:
A 12 hour drive to Sault Ste. Marie this Sat. If we're not too tired, hit a casino Sat night. Up early and visit Point Iroquois, Whitefish Point/Shipwreck Museum and Crisp Point on Sunday and drive on to Grand Marais. Visit Au Sable and Seul Choix Monday and then head back south to Ludington and get provisions for our check in on Tuesday morning.

I just got a new digital camera and plan to take lots of pictures. Because there is only a phone connection for internet and our usage of the lighthouse phone is limited to nights, I'll post pictures when I get back.

Have a great trip, John. You and Scot should have a blast. Big Sable is a great light in a beautiful setting. If you get to visit Little Sable, please get lots and lots of pictures of the lens up close - if you get there, you will know why.

There is a casino just down from Point Iroquois light, think it also has a motel. If memory serves me right, the Indian tribe contributed to the restoration of the light.

Don't forget that the roads on the UP are not superhiways, especially from Grand Marais to Au Sable. Also, I understand the MSP have been doing hi enforcement on many of the better UP roads, especially Route 2 on the south side....

Yes Operation Sabre had a great presence along Hwy 2 - lots of speed traps!

They have been paving the road between Grand Marias and the log slide this summer.

Have a great time! Dave is remembering correctly about the casino/motel. Just a short way from Iroqouis. The drive to Crisp Point seems to take forever but so worth it!
Make sure that you say hi to the "Captain" at Seul Choix! He loves to play tricks!!
You should get some really great pictures, especially if the leaves have turned! Looking forward to them! laugh
I'm working on trying to get to Big Sable and others, hopefully the 2nd week of October.
How far time wise is it from St. Ignace down to Big Sable? confused

Keep a diary during your time as "keeper", John. It will always be a cherished time, I'm sure.

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.
That was one of my very favorite lights on our Michigan trip. Can't wait until you post your
pictures.

John, is Big Sable going to be open while you're out there? I might try and get out to see you. I haven't been out there in almost two years. Something to pass along - you can't get to Au Sable from Grand Marais due to road construction. YOu might want to call ahead to see if they've completed it yet.
H-58 Road Closure

Deb, St. Ignace to Big Sable is probably 2.5 hours.
