We had a great time on Long Island and were able to see a total of 15 lighthouses. These are the lights we saw from a boat.

Stratford Shoal Lighthouse
Also known as the Middlegrounds Lighthouse. This distant shot was taken by Moby from the ferry we took from Port Jefferson, NY to Bridgeport, CT. This lighthouse is frequently classified as a New York lighthouse because the land (less than one acre) was ceded to the federal government by the State of New York in 1874. However, official maps today place the lighthouse on the Connecticut side of Long Island Sound by a good 1,000 feet.

Latimer Reef Lighthouse is located about a mile north of the eastern end of Fishers Island, between the island and Stonington, CT. This New York lighthouse is only accessible by boat and not open to the public.

Race Rock Lighthouse is located in Long Island Sound about eight miles from New London, CT. The tower of this New York light is square at the base and octagonal at the top

New York’s Little Gull Lighthouse is still an active aide to navigation and the grounds are not open to the public. Little Gull Island is situated at the eastern end of Long Island’s North Fork, where Long Island Sound opens out to the sea.

Plum Island Lighthouse. Plum Island is the largest of three islands that extend from the North Fork of Long Island northeasterly into Long Island Sound. The island is off limits to the public, so this New York lighthouse can only be seen from the water.

The Orient Point Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation. It cannot be reached by land and is not open to the public, although it can be viewed from Orient Point.

New York’s North Dumpling Lighthouse is located north of Fishers Island. In 1959 the lighthouse was sold into private hands and it has undergone a number of changes since then including the remodel and enlargement of the keeper's dwelling in 1980 which greatly altered its appearance. In the left hand corner you will see stone pilings that are the current owners representation of Stonehenge.
