Long and Winding Road to Alpena Part III

Day Seven: Lighthouses and More Lighthouse

85 and sunny turned into 55 and overcast... The view from our hotel room in Mackinaw City...

First Tanker of the day, spotted many more on the Huron..

the sun peeked out just for a moment on the way to 40 Mile Point Lighthouse..

It was still overcast when we arrived at 40 mile Point...

A sliver of sun sliced through the clouds just for a moment just as i got in position to shoot this image..

It went away as quickly as it came..

The Society is doing a really nice job with their restoration of the light and its grounds..

A flower for Mom and Mombo..

It's not every day you see a waterwheel just outside the place you eat lunch..

Alpena Pier Light..

You can get a nice shot of it from the end of the breakwater across the waterway from it..

It is a very long breakwater, very long...

Presque Isle Range Front Light has a new home, it is now located near the Marina before you arrive at the entrance to the Old Presque Isle Light where it used to be located..

The Old Presque Isle Light is still one of our favorite lights to visit..

I also still wish that Harbour lights would have paired it with New Presque Isle Light as a matched numbered set..

New Presque Isle Light is in super condition, the whole complex is really well cared for...

The Lighthouse is ready for the Festival to start.... as are the Bradys..

Thanks for taking the time to share those pics, Paul. Those lights really show the love and care taken to keep them in tip-top shape. That is good to see nowadays when it cost so much for upkeep.

P.S. The Brady Road Trip pics and stories are the best!

The lights pictured have all benefited from the proceeds from the Alpena Lighthouse Festival along with others to the tune of over a $125,000 over the last 8 years..

Bill's auction/seminar at the festival has been a part of the fund raising almost every year.. It was there that I won the #1 Rock of Ages Lighthouse from Bill's collection, last year. The money all went to lighthouse care and restoration..

Win, win in my eyes!!

Very impressive pictures Paul It's great to see and hear about what some groups are doing to keep up "their" lights. Impressive amount of money they've generated in the last 8 years.

Day Eight: Alpena Lighthouse Festival Begins..

We started off the day helping Nelson and Terry (MI Harbour Lights Reps) set up the Harbour Lights booth at the Festival Hdqtrs... The show at the center really gets going Saturday and Sunday so..

After shooting a few leaf shots...

Headed South to Sturgeon Point Lighthouse since the overcast morning was turning into a partly cloudy afternoon..

They had closed the lighthouse for the day when we arrived, so the flag wasn't waving in the breeze as it normally did..

The red shutters were all closed...

The tower was closed..

But it still doesn't get any better than this!!

I marvel at what care has been taken to keep those lights in such great shape as depicted in your photos. It makes me wonder if it is easier to care for a lighthouse that is on fresh water as compared to one that is exposed to the corrosive elements of the salt sea air.
