I stopped at the Post Office today and noticed that they are selling Lighthouse Stamps as of June. All are from the east Coast.

I picked up a roll of stamps at the post office yesterday and my only choices were FLAGS or ANTIQUE TOYS! Have to go back tomorrow and look up those lighthouse stamps.

Thanks for the heads up.

Heres a link to the U.S. Post Office Postal Store. Scroll to lighthouses and click on the word lighthouse:
http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/home.jsp

Scroll to the bottom to see descriptions of lighthouse stamps, first day covers, matted keepsakes, etc.

You can see photos of the two Southwestern Stamp "First Day" cancellation envelopes (caches)by scrolling over to the Lighthouse Preservation forum here. Then look for the thread titled, "OBLHS Tybee and Cape Lookout Caches".

If you'll then scroll down to the bottom of the first page, you'll find the information and how to purchase. These are being sold as a fundrasier through the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society.

We've sold a ton but still have more.

So if you would like to have these collectibles...and help lighthouses at the same time, I hope you will consider this purchase. send me an e-mail if you have questions or would like to purchase.

Thank you smile
Judy

I visited Cape Lookout last weekend and purchased a Stamp T-shirt at the Harker's Island Visitor Center. The T-shirt price tag had a web address to a site that makes military and USPS merchandice: www.ipledge.com

I visited the site and they have a whole SE Lighthouse area for anyone interested...they have T-shirts, tote bags, magnets, lapel pins and mugs:

The irony of shopping there is that their preferred shipping appears to be via UPS!

I went to the post office earlier this week and they now have matted prints of the five lighthouse stamps. They are 11 x 14 and have all five stamps included with the print. Each one has a large print of the org. stamp in full detail!

(Cost is $21.95. VERY NICE!!!)

I bought (had to have) one of each!

It was an effort to find the stamps at the post office. It took me a couple of weeks to get them, and visits to 3 post offices but I finally got em! They still had to go out back to find them for me, because they were out of them in the front! Got one to keep and one to share!

My post office has been out of the lighthouse stamps for awhile now. I was told I was the largest purchaser of them. Gee, no surprise there.

While I was at the post office today the guys working were telling all about the Home and Garden Television program Extreme Homes with the lighthouse on it. Looks like I've extended my reach to the post office. Wonder who will be the next "Lighthouse Awareness" target!

I actually bought 200 of the stamps the first week they were out knowing that they would probably be a big hit. Only my "good" mail gets a lighthouse stamp. No lighthouses on my bills!

Here's an easy way to get as many of the stamps and Stamped Postcards of the sotheastern Lighthouses (or anything else for that matter)

Go to

http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/home.jsp

You can order just about any stamp or other item they are selling. The fee is very small.

When I checked to pickup some more stamps, I was told they can't reorder them. They are discontinued. Glad I hung on to a couple of sheets.

Joyce,

Try the online store listed above.

They may still have them there and the delivery cost is minimal.

I knew about the stamps and have some, but what really surprised me was Harker's Island has a Visitor Center? I wish I had knew that when I went there about 3 yrs ago. Did you get out to see the lighthouse? I went by outboard for a 15 min viewing! smile

Joyce...you might also check with another post office in your area. I was told that it was up to each postmaster what stamps they ordered and how many. So, where one post office could be out, another might still have some.

If you strike out all around...I have a quantity, and could sell you a few sheets...just for the price of the stamps of course.

I'm almost out of stamps myself. Hoping to pick up more at the Stamp Ceremony at Navesink on the 23rd of this month. I've been told the artist who created the images for the stamps will be there as well.

Howard Koslow is the artist who created the images for the stamps.

We had the great pleasure of having breakfast with him the morning of the "First Day" dedication ceremony at Tybee. Then he also spoke at the ceremony.

Shirin, I had him autograph my caches, plus some extras that we will have in our auction for OBLHS in October. These are different from what you purchased, and what the Post Office was selling.

It's a clear plastic envelope containing a "First Day" cache for each of the five stamps. I also was given a 16X20 framed & matted print signed by Howard. This also has a brass plate commerating the day. That's a treasure for me!

You will enjoy meeting Howard Koslow. He is a very gentle quiet man.

Mr. Koslow was also the artist who did the "Great Lakes Series" back in '94. I believe that he told me that he's done something like 88 stamps since he's been with the Postal Service, going back over 35 years.

I'm trying to see how long it takes me to RECIEVE all 5 on envelopes from others. So far, I have Cape Henry, Cape Lookout, and Tybee Island. This is a fun way to collect them!!! (Yes, I hae a sheet too...need to get another!)

We were at Tybee on Saturday and they have "The First Day Issue" envelopes with all five stamps on one envelope for $12.95! I bought two. When I first ordered my envelopes from them, they didn't mention that they had them with all five stamps, so I only received the ones with Tybee Light on them. Now my collection is complete!

Also, I think I read somewhere that the Post Office printed 150,000,000 lighthouse stamps, so they should be around for a while!

Judy, just getting back on line, been busy for the past few days. I have sheets put aside. The Post Office said that they went to order more, but were advised no longer available for them to order. I checked another PO in the area, and they were out and said the same thing. So whenever what's out there now gets sold. That's it. Glad I put some aside for keeping.

During the Keeper's Weekend, when we celebrate the 200th birthday of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society will also have an auction.

Among the items available in the auction will be stamp caches signed by the artist, and the matted versions of the stamps mentioned above. We'll also still have sheets of stamps available.

Stay tuned! wink
