I don't know if Christmas has come late or my birthday has come early, but I just received my four piece layaway. Included in the four was St. Georges. IMO, it is the best of the original 17, at least of the ones that I own. I like the paint work that is on the rocks, a two-tone, translucent effect.

I would have to agree with you, Joanne. I don't know what it was about the sculpture, but I always thought it was one of the nicer looking of the 17. It does not seem all that popular to most people, but I really enjoyed it when I got mine a few years back. Just seemed a bit more realistic looking than some of the others.

I like this one also. If you notice, the early issues of St.George Reefs have that washed out effect where the wave washes over the cassen and the water runs down the side leaving an orangeish tinge. The later releases kinda have more of a, what I call a shark tooth effect on the cassen representing the water stain running down the side. Again,as I've said in the past, instead of redoing already issued GLOW pieces, it would be cool to see Harbour Lights make this into a GLOW using their pewter technology for the boom on this piece. It also was the most expensive lighthouse to build at the time.

You're right about a "shark's tooth effect". Mine has that look and that's a good description of it.

Here! Here! for St George's Reef How could anyone have passed it up! Another difference besides the Sharks tooth effect is that the loading platform where the "absent" boom would lower it's cargo as well as the base itself appears to have come in two significantly different colors. On my piece #4022 most of the base and the entire loading platform are almost the same color as the tower, a very light cream color. On the HL website, their image shows a St. George's Reef where the platform and base are almost as dark as the rocks themselves. Mine also has more water stains on the tower and looks like the photo in the HL brochure. Of course, the website image is an earlier piece with the lightning rod as well. www.harbourlights.com/catalog/1991/images/stgeorge/HL115SG_DS4.jpg Were there just these 2 basic color schemes or is there a wide variety of combinations? I love St. George's Reef, too, especially upon reading about the arduous task of building the darn thing. It's one of the wonders of the world, if you ask me.
Can you imagine (and I'm not suggesting they do it, but...) if HL made a GLOW of St. George's Reef? It would be a "Wow™"...no question about it.

The reason I always liked the St. George's Reed sculture was that it is a very distinctive and unique style. Add to this the history of its' building and how difficult it is to even get to it.
My # 4513 has the cream colored caison with the shark's tooth coloring. The 'teeth' are very clean and well defined. When comparing to the picture on HL-dot-com, I also notice that the shark's teeth going up the tower are quite a bit smaller on mine.

[QUOTE] [the arduous task of building the darn thing. It's one of the wonders of the world, if you ask me.]
If thats the case, Harbour Lights has already mastered the metal work, they can duplicate the rigging, like on the A/B's, then they can release a beautiful St. Geroge's Reef in the G.L.O.W. series. Just take a look at Mark Sherman's watercolor of St.George's Reef. It would be nice.

they can release a beautiful St. Geroge's Reef in the G.L.O.W. series. I don't think there's much chance of that happening soon, given that you can still find St. Georges Reef LE at retail fairly easily. Due to the Collector backlash over the likes of Bolivar and Alcatraz GLOWs being released before the paint was dry on the LEs, I think Y&A will stay away from this one for a while. ------------------ -Art

Thank You Mark! What a great comparison Mine is very similar to the last image (Maylasian piece) but on the base (caison?) the color of the platform and stains is much lighter and the stain pattern on the base is just slightly different and seems just a little more subtle so it blends more with the base. Thanks again for the great comparison images!!

Actual lighthouse....Have any of you ever seen it close up? What about flying over it? If any of you know a way, email me the particulars.

I've seen it from the shore - very much in the distance, but viewable through binoculars. There might be a way to hire a boat from Crescent City.

You can always join the SGR Preservation Society and be put on the waiting list for a helicopter ride out to the light...I understand members can get selected to help clean the station (when weather allows). The HL dealer in Eureka is a local SGR expert and a nice guy too!

Any one have any info about how to donate to the St. George's Reef preservation society? I live too far away to get a helicopter ride but always am willing to donate a little to help preserve a lighthouse. It too is one of my favorites of the original pieces.

Hi, Just recieved my St George's Reef from an ebay transaction. The rocks are black. Has any one ever seen all black rocks on St George's Reef. It is one of the Malaysian pieces. Hope I didn't get a repainted one, on inspection it looks good it's just black. Any info would be a help. Thanks! George

The rocks on my piece appear to be brown with a black stain on top, giving a translucent appearance.

Thanks, Joanne. Maybe I am being picky. I really like the HL it's just that those dark rocks really do stand out when you put St George's Reef among the other HL Thanks again, George

You're welcome George,
If you looked at the photographs above or the 1991 catalog on the website, those rocks appear much lighter in color than the rocks on my piece. Mine appears much darker, so I think that your piece has not been retouched, but has more of a black wash or stain, like mine.

George,
Just saw your post. My St. George's Reef has brown-mostly black rocks. Never really noticed it before you mentioned it. Got mine at a HL dealer last year on Cape Cod. Thought it was a unique piece then and it was signed by BY so it went home with us.
I used to drive myself crazy when my HL didn't look like the brochures/pictures. After many calls to Harbour Lights I learned that the photos may be artists proofs and not necessarily exactly like the finished product.
Enjoy your St. George it is one of my favorite 5500's.

Thanks again Joanne and Donna You guys are right. I did look at the pictures and thought, Geez mine does not look like the pictures. After looking closely it looks like in some places the black wash almost makes the rocks look wet. So I will take your advice and enjoy my first of the original 17. I like the name too! Take care, George
