Our resident Saint Paul Brady and wife Sue started off on Wednesday morning for their driving vacation which will ultimately end up at the Cape Hatteras event this coming Saturday. He's sending a letter home to his Mom who wasn't able to join them on this lighthouse trip.

I talked him into sharing his daily travelog that he's emailing to 'Mom' with those of us who also aren't able to go.

So here's installment one:

Wednesday, May 24, 2000
Quote:
Hi MOM,

Here we are ready for the road to Hatteras! We got up at 6:00 AM and this picture was shot at 10:00 AM when we were finally ready to leave. The car was available to pick up at 7:00 AM but I was still trying to get the program to download the images from the digital camera to the laptop computer to work... until about 8:30 or 9:00, then we picked up the car and brought it home and
started packing. The car is really nice! It is a Crysler Concord which is the top of their line. The seats are more comfortable than the Lincoln we leased to go to Wind Point. It is brand new.. only 573 miles on it and the temporary plates are from Oklahoma so this is probably the second trip for it.

Paul and I are still working out getting the photos and the commentary without the images leaves a lot to be desired.

Here is a key picture from Saturday morning as Bill Younger presents the first "Cape Hatteras On The Move" to Lieutenant JG Clampett Current Commander of CG Station Hatteras.

Paul's emails to me were getting hung-up by my mail server and all came pushing through late last night. I've set up a page at HarbourLights.com so please view his "Excellent Adventure" at:

www.HarbourLights.com/events/Hatteras_2000/index.htm

I'm waiting for the text and images from Saturday.

Striking how much larger the HL is than the real lighthouse, isn't it?

That's a neat shot; HotM resting on the markers of the old lighthouse location, with Hattie in the background at the new spot. Cool.

Paul... some wonderful pics there. Oh how I do enjoy them. I look forward to seeing more very soon. I talked with Woody and Cindy at the Lighthouse Gallery today. They told me you were by and took a few pics. Have fun out there!

Days Nine and Ten have been added to Paul's continuing travelogue. On these days he visits and revisits Currituck and Bodie Island lighthouses and several Outer Banks Harbour Lights dealers.

Paul, I enjoyed your jouney especially from Bodie to Currituck - I was in Nags Head August 1998 where I found Harbour Lights, Hurricane Mo's, the Pigman, all those gift shops, etc.
Paul, you missed the German Brewery & Restaurant over the bridge in Manteo and the Lost Colony. Maybe you did them before or can do them next time. You're making me plan a revisit next year -
thanks!
Bob

Most definitely Bob, infact, my family, as well as another are renting a beach house this July. We plan on doing many of those things including The Lost Colony (got my press passes for that one!) Once again, thanks to Paul for all the great pics and info. I wrote down a few of those places on my trip tic as "must visit!" Also, thanks to JC for getting the trip on HL's website.

Day 11 is now up for viewing -- and I've reorganized the photos into one-day at a time pages. With so many photos on the previous mostly one page, it was getting to be REAL long to load.

So you can start on any page and go back or forward in time.

This has been a LOT of work for Paul and Sue's pitched in too. So he deserves all the credit he's getting here. Thanks Paul for taking us all along.

Have a safe trip home.

Posted for Michael & Karn Power who say they, too, are having trouble posting to some forums because their name or password aren't recognized.

We just got in the door from our trip to the Outer Banks. Wow! Do they
ever get weather in the Outer Banks. Our condo on the beach was hit twice
by lightning the first night! That was a bit of a rush.

Hatteras on the Move is Outstanding. There was a large turn out for the
presentation at the Coast Guard Station and an even larger turn out at the
signing event. It was great fun seeing some old friends, putting faces to
some of the folks we had not met in person yet and meeting some of the
folks who aren't Forum participators, but are great Wackos none-the-less.

Once again, Harbour Lights generosity to their collectors was outstanding.
We had some great "pig pickins" at the house where John, Betty, Paul and
Sue were staying. Rumor said that Kim called the local bar-b-que house,
gave them the Harbour Lights credit card # and said make it happen. And
well they did.

Without a doubt, we are a pretty nice bunch of folks who collect these
lighthouses. We found, as we do every time we get into a HL group, that
there are many interesting characters and many interesting stories to
exchange. We are even planning on taking up invites by some folks we met
for some lighthouse treking with them.

Hey Mike! If you happen to visit the Forum and see this, you'll probably be
surprised how soon you'll be seeing us. We just found out we are going to
Ohio for a family reunion on July 4, so we are looking forward to that boat
trip and some lighthousing!

Michael made the climb to the top of Hatteras. What an absolutely
beautiful lighthouse she is. I have included a few of pictures that Michael
took.
One picture is from the top of Hatteras looking down where I was on my
trusty little cart that we rented so I could get around better. Michael
took the picture with a zoom and without. That fellow standing next to me
is Rich Rohweder and Cam (his wifling) and one of his two daughters who
were there with us. They had just come down from their climb up the tower.
They are the neatest family and we feel very fortunate to be able to call
them friends.

We visited the Wright Brothers Memorial and after speaking with the
historian have found that we are going to be donating my great
grandfather's and my grandfather's notes and pictures with the Wright
family to the the Wright Brother's Museum. It is so good to finally find
the right place to get them out where they can be enjoyed by more people.
We were actually able to tell the historian stories about the Wright family
that he had never heard. He especially got a kick out of our old family
joke. My grandfather was the little kid that Orville and Wilbur gave money
to in an attempt to get him to stop bothering them at the bicycle shop. So
the family story has always been that my grandfather was single-handedly
responsible for power flight being invented in 1903 . . . . rather than
1902. Our visit was great fun.

Michael and I had a wonderful time and feel fairly certain a good time was
had by all.

Karen and Michael

Thanks St. Paul for your wonderful photos and narrative. It's almost like being there with the with you. I certainly appreciate all your efforts to bring your visual experiences to us who weren't there.

Nice montage from Michael and Karen Power, too. Thanks St. John for posting it.

Terry,

You must be referring to my friend John Smith. He is an anwry character. I knew I had enjoyed a cup of coffee with him at the San Diego reunion, but for the life of me I could not remember his name. He had great fun at my expense (as you witnessed) trying to convince me his name was John Smith.

He is one of the ever-to-be-famous Younger boys. Yes, Bill's brother, Howard Younger. He is an absolute delight and told me later that he would have told me before the end of the day what his name was.

I cornered Betty O'Brien and Paul Brady and that's how I found out his name!

When he admitted to me later that he in fact was Bill's brother, I had fun trying to convince everyone within ear shot that he was Bob Younger, come back! So I had some fun with him as well.

What he was referring to in the catalog was the Bob Younger Memorial Tree and was quite distressed (LOL) that it wasn't in the catalog. This little exchange had been going on for sometime when you heard our exchange in front of the building.

I definitely remember you Terry, you had the best seat in the house. Your momma didn't raise any fools! Right! It was fun, wasn't it.

Karen

Many, many thanks to Paul Brady for the fantastic coverage of their trip to Hatteras and the Outer Banks. It made us at home feel like we were part of it too!

Thanks also to John for getting everything posted for us, and to Michael and Karen for further great photos and commentary!

The final two days of Paul & Sue's Excellent Adventure are up.
www.HarbourLights.com/events/Hatteras_2000/day13.htm www.HarbourLights.com/events/Hatteras_2000/day14.htm

I counted up a total of 253 images in Paul's travel journal. A few others like this week's 'cover shot' that shows Hatteras On The Move with the real one in the background.

Thanks again, Paul (and Sue).

Paul and Sue... thanks again for the great memories through the photos of your trip. I really enjoyed them. When you were traveling on I-77N in Charlotte, you took a picture of our beloved Caravel Seafood Restaurant (the one with the lighthouse). This is a "fish camp" which has been around now for about 5 years. By the way, just before the restaurant, you passed by my office. I could have hit you with a water pistol! Too bad we couldn't hook up and meet. Maybe next time.

Now Tim,you know if they`re not going to let me shout on the Forum, then they surely won`t let you promote (water)gun grabbing comments like this go unchecked.Don`t you know children read this Forum(Jakers,Gravedigger,Fred Kuhl,TerryBarfield & at least several hundred more). This is the South and the mere mention of a violent act will be frowned upon.

Paul and Sue,

Thank you so very much for sharing your Excellent Adventure with us all. We have really enjoyed it, especially since we were there.

We do so regret that my health and the weather and our changing from one time share to another and another and another and one more (and your constantly busy telephone because you were always transmitting your Excellent Adventure to John) didn't allow us and our group to get back together with you and John and Betty.

And thank you for being a part of it being such a great time for us.

Thanks a bunch,
Michael and Karen

Is the real Younger brother Howard or Harold?
The delightful brother from Jacksonville, FL that is?

Derith,

I believe after trying so hard to find out what his name is, I then went and messed it up. I believe you are correct, I think his name is Harold not Howard. Does anyone out there know for sure? "Who was that masked man!" He gave me a hard enough time getting his name. I never did get where he was from, but he has a wonderful southern accent.

Karen

PS - It was great to meet you and your family in NC.

The gentleman in question's name is indeed Harold and he is in fact Bill Younger's brother. I first met Harold at a signing a couple of years ago and quickly found out he has the same quick wit as Bill and Kim. It must be a Younger trait!
