Well, I didn't do the Md Challenge but did head down to Tilghman's Island for Monday's "Great Circle Route." Among the many pictures, I chose to show just these two ... Sharp's Island, becasue until you see it, you cannot believe how much it really tilts ... and Thomas Point, becasue, unlike Drum Point and Hooper Strait, it is NOT a museum piece, rather, it is just there ... Looks like you had a pretty day, Barry. Thanks for sharing. The day a group of us took a ride around the Bay prior to the Baltimore Reunion, the weather was not quite so accomodating.

Great photos! What was the trip itself like? I am considering taking this one next year, maybe seeing if I can kick in mega-PPM and get my dad to take me on a 3-4 day MD/Chesapeake sea/land trip. Thanks for sharing!

Great pictures, Barry. Still opening mail that accumulated in our absence, so won't get Stan's pics posted until the weekend or later. Enjoyed lunch, but the boat was too small--my back was killing me from not being able to sit comfortably with my back up against something. Will have to make certain future cruises are aboard bigger ships.
Sharp's Island list is mind-boggling, especially knowing it's still an active light. What I found even more amazing was the movement of the land beneath this and others in the Bay. To think they were built on an island that has since disappeared astonished me.
Fran, where did you sit? Were you the lady who stopped me at the marina with word that the person who wrote the Hokey Pokey died--they had difficulty burying him because when they'd put his left foot in, and his right foot out. . . ? Like my shirt says--"What if the Hokey Pokey is what it's all about!?"

I was on the previous trip and sat in the open up front on the seat that was in front of the winshield on the right. A bigger boat would be nice but I was let on as the 21 person on a sold out trip. Since I have been trying to do this trip in nice weather for 3 years I was happy to get on. Fran

Fran, Then I guess we didn't meet after all. Captain told me he schedules that trip the day before and the day after the Challenge annually. He did mention that he sold out Friday's trip and was happy about that. There were 13 of us on the Monday trip and I thought that was crowded. He does cover a lot of water in the trip and gets to lights that can't be seen from land. The weather was super for both trips; sure was glad I wore my sea bracelets because it got quite rocky a number of times.

Stan and I didn't do the MD Challenge, but we did photograph most (if not all) of the lights that were being hunted. Our first stop during our 7-day stay in Greensboro, MD was Seven Foot Knoll: Hastily got this one of Lazaretto Point on our way off the private property (gatekeeper taking her job much too seriously): Shame Fort Carroll Light not being care for--very easy to get to: Concord Point: Tried to get a photograph of Fishing Battery Light, but the "powers that be" would not allow Stan to venture out on the property with a camera--the property is a rehabilitation center and anonymity and cameras don't mix. Last shot the first day of our trip is of Turkey Point:

Nice photos, Sandy...though you seem to have a mix up on the last two. The top photo is Finns Point, like the second one...Tinicum has a watch room below. I know, since I was there on Saturday. Both of you - thanks for taking us along! I really want to get down to MD now...I went years ago seeing only the "biggies" (the challenge lights minus Fort Washington...thought that Roberts/Jones books included every lighthouse in the world). I'd love to revisit them, see the new ones, and take a cruise or two.

Bob,
Bellevue RR Light is in Wilmington, DE and is accessed through the Wilmington landfill which restricts admittance. Stan had to sign a "hold harmless" document but we had no problems navigating through the landfill to photograph the light.
Marcus Hook RR Light is in Gordon Heights (Edgemoor), DE on a hill overlooking the Delaware River. Detailed instructions can be found on the Lighthousefriends.com site. We think the tower was recently sandblasted because it looks so clean compared to the dwelling, but there's no signage indicating any group has begun renovating the site.
Turtle Rock Light is in Philadelphia, PA and is part of the Sedgeley Club in Fairmont Park. The Lighthouse Digest site has a great write-up on the light--check out Judi A. Kearney's June, 1997 article, The Light on Turtle Rock.
We searched for the Tinicum Front Range Light which is on Second Street in the town of Billingsport just north of Paulsboro, but couldn't locate the light. The Rear Range Light's location is clearly marked on signs in Billingsport.
Finn's Point Rear Range Light is in Pennsville, NJ on Lighthouse Road. Local preservationists have restored the light and it is located in a wildlife refuge in Fort Mott State Park.

Tinicum FR is just a light on a basic steel skeletal structure out in the middle of the Mobil Refinery. The only way you can see it, other than going into the refinery (probably hard to do) or from the water is to climb the lighthouse. It's not worth effort - the original structure was cool, but was destroyed long ago. Now all there is is a boring standard tower.

Day 3 lights included Liston Front Range Light located in Fort Penn, DE on the banks of the Delaware River. The lighthouse remains in good condition, is privately owned and inactive. We stopped at the Fort Penn Post Office and obtained directions from the postmistress. A short modern metal tower located on the grounds now serves as the front range light. Liston Rear Range Light is located 3.5 miles inland from the Front Range Light. It once held a 2nd order Fresnel lens, unusually powerful for a range light. It was automated in 1976 and its lens exchanged for an aero-marine beacon. It remains an active aid to navigation in conjunction with the Front Range Light which is a short modern metal tower on the grounds of the original building. Reedy Island Rear Range Light is located on Route 9 in Taylor’s Bridge, DE. This 1910 range light replaced an earlier tower dating back to 1838. A steel tower fitted with the automated light from the Cape Henlopen station in 1929 replaced the Mispillion River Light located at the end of Lighthouse Road in Milford, DE. The old lighthouse was a 2-story dwelling with an attached, square wooden tower about 48' tall. One of the locals owning a cottage across from the tower tells of the attempt to keep the original lighthouse in-place after a real estate agent purchased it. He directed us to Shipcarpenter Square in Lewes, DE’s historic district to see what remained of the lighthouse following a May, 2002 fire (lightning strike). It is believed that the present owners are using the original plans and what materials they can to build a replica of the old lighthouse. Steel tower: REPLICA as of 9/17/05:

On to Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes, DE where Delaware Breakwater East Light and Harbor of Refuge Light can be seen: Harbor of Refuge Light, Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes, DE: The restored Indian River Lifesaving Station, Bethany Beach, DE: The last light for Day 3 was Fenwick Island Light, 146th St. and Lighthouse Lane in Fenwick Island, DE (just a few feet north of the Maryland border): The Transpeninsular line at Fenwick Island Light. It is not a Mason-Dixon Line marker. This line was in-place 13 years before Mason and Dixon reached America’s shores. Refer to America's Atlantic Coast Lighthouses, 5th edition, page 107 for details.

Great trip Sandy, research, and directions. Did you see Overfalls and the 'faux' Cape Henelopen? I will definitely be using your adventure & directions to fill in my trip in 2006. Rehoboth 2006 I was counting on two lh cruise trip to the Lewes area LHs (Breakwater East & HoR) that were canceled because of insurance costs. Hopefully they'll be settled next year. thanks, Bob

Great travelogue ... as close as they are, I've never seen the lights on land in Delaware excepting Fenwick Island.
