Just announced yesterday: Five Pacific Lighthouses will be immortalized on stamps for their important role in safeguarding mariners navigating waters. The five Pacific Lighthouses stamps will honor Diamond Head Light in Hawaii, Five Finger Light in Alaska, Grays Harbor Light in Washington, Umpqua River Light in Oregon and St. George Reef in Northern California. Each stamp features an original acrylic painting by Howard Koslow based on recent photographs of the lighthouses. Koslow also painted the five Southeastern Lighthouses stamps issued in 2003, as well as the five stamps in the 1990 Lighthouses booklet and the five Great Lakes Lighthouses stamps issued in 1995. Here\'s the link They're quite nice. I hope Harbour Lights capitalizes on them with a new series (perhaps a series of new LLOM-sized pieces along with the actual stamps). Cheers!

I'll start saving my pennys now so that I can stock up when they hit the market. The website didn't give a date of issue? Or maybe I just missed it?

If your post office is like ours was, they had one delivery of the last lighthouse stamps (the southeast ones). When they were sold they were done, and it didn't take long. I happened to find a "stash" at a little post office mobile trailer that was set up at an area festival. You would think they would make more of stamps that would be popular and fewer of some of the rather ugly ones that are always available (probably because no one wants them....)

Dave, the post office seems to have gotten wise to the stamp collectors. They don't print too many of the desirable stamps, so we all scrabble after the few. That way their issues are sold out quickly and they can get back to selling the "ordinary" stamps.

Ahh, but what happens with the popular stamps is that many never make it onto an envelope so the post office makes more $$ on each of them sold. Some of the topics / subjects they have chosen for stamps make me wonder if the group selecting them ever passed a drug screen.........

My mother always complains that her post office only ever has flag stamps. She always asks for something colorful, and they seldom have anything nice.

I wish the Post Office would get a little bit more creative/colorful with Christmas stamps.
About the Southwestern stamps, I remember buying a quantity of sheets from the temp P.O. set up at Cape Lookout, and then frantically trying to keep them from getting damp on the "ferry" skiff going back to Harkers Island. Rough waters that day.

I appreciate the heads up also Bill. Thanks for the information. I like to go into the Post Office and look at what stamps they have available while I am waiting in line ( my P.O. has a display case). I look forward to this series not because I am a collector of stamps but it will be nice to put a sheet on display with my lighthouses.
Like others I have to admit I am not a big fan of southwestern vegetables or whatever else it was my husband brought home for stamps one time but I have to appreciate the fact that the Post Office is trying, just as the US Mint is with its state quarters and Lewis and Clark nickels to generate interest and income to support themselves and our economy.

I'm really excited about this issue...this time I'll buy more than one sheet. They went really easily last time, and I had to go all over just to find some. As to the other issues...they are pretty strange. Such as Pollination. I didn't know that was an issue. Apparently, the stamps will be "An intricate graphic scheme emphasizes the ecological relationship between pollinators and plants and also hints at the biodiversity necessary to ensure the future viability of that relationship." And Jury Duty...because people REALLY want to remember THAT when they get their mail. But at least the "normal" lighthouse stamps make up for all that.

Now Greg you haven't even served jury duty. How do you know it is a bad thing? Perhaps you can report back after you serve.
