I have a rough idea of what it's going to be but it's classified info and if I tell you I'll have to break five ventilator balls off of your most prized limited editions. I'll give you one hint, it's a lighthouse known to many. Bob

If Bob M knows something my guess is it's from his part of the country. Perhaps out there on the tip of Cape Cod?

I've been holding off on posting this for a while now....
If I were you I would check out Collector's Mart February 2002 Issue.
One more hint, the exclusive and society piece come from the same state.....

I'll be mighty "tickled" to see both NC pieces....especially Roanoke River. One of the earliest, "I WILL see this lighthouse" trips, was Roanoke River. This is the real thing in all of it's sad state...thought there was a chance of retoration, but it doesn't look like it now. It's sad that it has been allowed to get in this fix. Sorry for the black and white ... it is a color photo. http://www.lhdepot.com/database/uniquelighthouse.cfm?value=878 This is info on what is happening with the situation now. http://www.roanokeriver.com/news_features/lighthouse.htm Derith PS Roger Bansemer does a great job with this light in his NC/SC book. Derith, isn't your second link referencing the replication of the Roanoke Marshes Light rather than the Roanoke River Light? http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/history/WEBLIGHTHOUSES/roanokemarshes.JPG It seems as though the light pictured is the Marshes Light and the story of the light that was moved the River Light??? Whatever, I hope the Society Piece is depicted as a screwpile structure.

Sue,
From the write up, they call it the Roanoke River Light, which "once stood on a screw pile foundation on the Roanoke Marshes". Sounds to me like the same light being called different names.

Gets a bit confusing. The Coast Guard site indicates 2 lights and the old photo of the Marsh Light matches the drawing but doesn't look like the River light. Dates don't match either.

I think the Marsh Light version was built in 1866 and it was replaced after a storm by the one that was finished in 1887, which is the one that was moved to where it stands today. The city is building a reproduction of the 1866 version... I think!

Paul is right. The town of Manteo is building a replica of 1866 version of the light. Originally, the town wanted to move the Roanoke River Light from Edenton to Manteo. But, the cost of buying the light was too high. I think I read/heard that the family that owned the lighthouse wanted one million dollars from the town for it. So, now it is just sitting there rotting away.
Maybe HL plans to start a Soon to be Lost (if nothing is done about it) series. Roanoke River and Mispillion would be two good choices to start with.

Good morning all, My ATT server is acting up and I was unable to get anything done after I posted last night.
Plymouth, NC or Edenton, NC(where it is sitting now) are the cities that I have read may be doing the replica. I don't recall Manteo being mentioned. There is a museum in Manteo that has lots of info on the lighthouse. In fact, HL has a copy of everything the museum had. I spoke with the owner the same year I photographed the light and he called it the Roanoke River Light. It stood where the Roanoke River dumped out into the sound. This one was built in 1887 and was moved to Edenton in the summer of 1955.
My lament is that I didn't know that this lighthouse even existed. I grew up in a town on the Roanoke River and could have seen this light while it was in the water. No, Dave not in the 1800's but in the 1950's before it was moved.
So, I am a happy camper about this light. Derith

Thanks for clearing up some of my confusion. Both the Coast Guard and NPS sites state that the River Light was first lit in 1903 so there must have been some time in between the two lights to allow for the 2nd light's building, etc. Now, do we know which version HL is making and whether it will be depicted on it's original site if it's the 2nd one? I don't want much do I?

In Rick's picture, there appears to be a Fresnel in the lantern room. Looking at these pictures, I wonder if the lens is worth more than the rest of the place. Certainly hope that if there is a lens in place that it gets donated to a group who will treasure it and share it with the public in an appropriate display setting. (before someone steals it or trashes it.)

I agree with you Dave! That lens, if its real and it looks real, is probably worth more than the building. The place can really use some work. It looks like it was a real beauty in its day and with some work, it could become a showplace again!

The society year ends in about 5 weeks (April 30th). Are there any photos or images of the HL replicas of the Society membership and redemption pieces? Or are we a little early. We have seen photos of these great lights, in this topic tread but isn't it soon time to "roll" back the curtain and unveil images of the new pieces! Looking forward to them soon, Christopher

Between now and April 30th = GREAT ANTICIPATION! I always look forward to the new membership and society pieces. Sometimes within the next five weeks I imagine we'll be seeing pictures. The next wait will be for the delivery of the membership piece. MORE ANTICIPATION!
